Driftless Area Art Festival

The Driftless area, a unique region that escaped the glaciers of the ice age, is an inspirational setting to many talented artists and artisans. Its hills and valleys are home to painters and potters, woodworkers and weavers, musicians and metalsmiths. To see the breadth and variety of their creations, you usually have to visit studios, stores and galleries across the area. But once a year in September, these artists gather together in Crawford County at the Driftless Area Art Festival in Soldiers Grove along Highway 131, right by U.S. 61.

This year, the Driftless Area Art Festival happens Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22, 2019. Admission and parking are free! Enjoy a drive with exceptional scenery, as the Driftless Area of Wisconsin is ridiculously beautiful. You can then stroll through the exhibits, imbibe in some local fare, and sip some local wines. Also, we’re pretty sure if you want to buy some of the art you can do that.

National Alpaca Farm Days

Ever meet alpacas up close and personal? National Alpaca Farm Days in Beloit offers you the chance to do just that. You can also learn about alpacas, their care, and their fiber, which can be spun into amazing products. It takes place at Pacesetter Alpacas in Beloit Saturday and Sunday, September 21-22 and September 28-29, 2019.

During National Alpaca Farm Days, you will be able to learn about alpacas, their care, and their fiber. There will be local fiber artists on-site to demonstrate fiber preparation techniques (skirting, picking, carding), spinning fiber into yarn, then knitting, weaving, or felting the fiber and yarn into product. The event provides an excellent opportunity to shop early for the holidays! Items for sale include clothing, socks, handmade accessories, dryer balls, raw fleece, roving, yarn, and more! There will also be fun activities for kids, and food will be available from Rosemarie’s Kitchen Table.

The owners of Pacesetters Alpacas, Dennis and Christy Pace, purchased 80 acres of land in 1995 and soon after became interested in Suri alpacas. There are two kinds of alpacas, the Huacaya (pronounced Wuh-kai-ya) and the Suri. Huacaya alpacas are fluffy like teddy bears and Suri alpacas have long shiny locks like very soft, slightly curly hair. Along with their alpacas, the Paces have a store with a variety of items for sale including warm and soft alpaca socks, hats, scarves, sweaters and much more. The store is open on Saturdays 9 am-3 pm and Sundays 12-4 pm between Thanksgiving and Christmas or by appointment. The store will be also open during the event. Saturday hours are 9 am-4 pm and Sunday hours are 12-4 pm. If you are unable to visit us during those times, give us them a call at 608-751-2261.

Proceeds from the event will benefit Friends of Noah Wisconsin—an all-breed animal rescue.

Tomah Kegs, Corks & Forks

Hey, all roads lead to Tomah, take one of them (I-90, I-94, US 12, Highway 16, Highway 21, or Highway 131… we weren’t kidding about “all roads”) Saturday, September 14th and check out the Tomah Rotary Kegs Corks & Forks Festival! It was formerly the Tomah Beer & Sausage Festival, but with more food, wine, and more being added, a new name was created. We’re cool with that.

Kegs Corks & Forks takes place from 5-8pm at Tomah Recreational Park’s Ice Hockey Rink, although partying will continue well past that. There will be a Smoked Meat Competition where the competitors are the Tomah Police Department vs. the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, craft beer sampling, wine tasting, plenty of area food vendors offering samples and food for sale, along with prizes, raffles, drawings, and a post-event concert featuring Lassos and Lace followed by Jay Allen.

Tickets range from $40 for general admission, which starts at 6pm; $60 for VIP admission, which begins at 5pm; you can also get concert-only tickets for $20 ahead of time or $25 the day of the show. You can buy tickets ahead of time here.

Tomah is the seat of Monroe County and the place where all the major roads meet and split. I-90 & I-94 converge here, as do their pre-Interstate compatriots, U.S. 12 and Highway 16. Highway 21 skims Tomah to the north and Highway 131 comes in from the Driftless Area south.

This is the start of “Cranberry Country” too, so check out the nearby bogs, sample fresh cranberries and all kinds of tasty foods made with this remarkable little fruit, and explore the town while you’re there!

HarborPark Jazz, Rhythm & Blues Festival

HarborPark Jazz, Rhythm & Blues Festival logoHarborPark Jazz, Rhythm & Blues Festival is one of Kenosha’s favorite music events and returns this year with a powerful mix of New Orleans style Jazz, straight ahead Jazz and true hometown Chicago Style Blues.

After a five-year hiatus, the Arts & Crafts Village returns to the HarborPark festival showcasing a broad mix of juried fine art, paintings, prints, photographs, sculpture, jewelry, handmade clothing, fine crafts and a lively art-making tent aimed at families with young children. Artisans will showcase their talent in a variety of mediums on the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan. Art pieces, prints and merchandise will be available for purchase. The Kenosha Art Association is partnering with the event to produce the Arts & Crafts Village.

Music Lineup & Schedule, straight from their website (times subject to change):
2:30 p.m.:  Natty Nation opens the main stage with a Caribbean presentation of Reggae music. JAH Boogie and his band’s tight but fluid, rootsy but funky, beautiful but gritty, righteous but real vibration is clear to anyone listening on stereo or live in concert. It’s almost impossible not to dance at a Natty Nation show, where their message is simple: Spread the positive vibration!

4:00 p.m.: Milwaukee’s hottest R&B band Christopher’s Project with Joe (the Crooner) Jordan

5:45 p.m.: Nora Jean Bruso Blues Band

7:30 p.m.: Internationally-acclaimed saxophonist Paul Taylor will perform as the main evening act.

Tickets:
General admission lawn seats for the HarborPark Jazz, Rhythm & Blues Festival are $25 in advance or $35 at the gate. Texas Roadhouse VIP Lounge tickets are $85 each (includes concert ticket, food, complimentary beer and wine). Ticket outlets: Kenosha Community Foundation (600 52nd St #110), Tenuta’s Deli (3203 52nd St.), Andrea’s (2401 60th St.), and Brat Stop Cheese Mart (12304 75th St.). You can purchase tickets online here.

HarborPark Jazz venue

The HarborPark Jazz, Rhythm and Blues festival is produced by the volunteer efforts of the Mary Lou & Arthur F Mahone Fund, a non-profit organization. Alcoholic carry-ins are NOT permitted. All proceeds benefit their Career Exploration Organization scholarship program. The mission of the Mahone Fund is to provide educational opportunities for economically and academically deserving youth and to support healthy lifestyle initiatives in communities of color.

This takes place at Celebration Place in HarborPark, and is a rain or shine event. You can access HarborPark, which is right along the lake in downtown Kenosha, via Highways 32, 50, and 158. Downtown Kenosha is about eight miles east of I-41/94.

Seymour Burgerfest

Seymour Burgerfest & Balloon Rally celebrates the “Home of the Hamburger”! Seymour is where the hamburger was reportedly invented by Charlie Nagreen in 1885, improvising the sandwich while selling meatballs at the Outagamie County Fair. Burgerfest celebrates this momentous creation with a big Balloon Rally Friday night, the World’s Largest Hamburger Parade, the Bun Run, Kids’ Run, music, kids’ games, the Burger Eating Contest and the Giant Ketchup Slide! The Car Show, Railroad Depot and Community Museum are included with the Saturday entrance fee.a 190-pound hamburger they grill up right there, the burger-eating contest, and you can even take a plunge on the ketchup slide!

The Car Show, viewing the model railroad at the Railroad Depot, and seeing the world’s largest hamburger memorabilia exhibit at the Seymour Community Museum are included with the Saturday Burger Fest entrance fee. Downtown Seymour Saturday events cost only $3 in advance and $5 at the gate. Children 12 and under are admitted free with paid adult on Saturday downtown. Wristbands are available from Seymour merchants Don’s Quality Market, Seymour Public Library, Seymour Community Museum. Or, get your Tickets in Advance here.

During a previous Burgerfest, Seymour celebrants cooked up the World’s Largest Hamburger – according to Guinness – at 8,266 pounds!

“In 1885, Charles N. Nagreen, a young lad of 15, came to the Seymour Fair to sell meatballs. When he realized people wanted to walk around the fair grounds and eat, he flattened a meatball between two slices of bread and called it a ‘hamburger.’ This was the first time the hamburger sandwich was produced and sold.” [/highlight]

The Guinness Book of World Records noted that Seymour is where the “World’s Largest Hamburger” was cooked – right there on the Charlie Grill. In August of 2001, a 8,266 pound hamburger was cooked up and served to over 13,000 people.

The State Trunk Tour has been there; amidst the bands, the model railroad museum and hungry and thirsty festival goers milling about under the statue of Charles “Hamburger Charlie” Nagreen (the hamburger’s inventor), was the main attraction: a 60-pound hamburger. Sure, it’s a fraction of the monstrous 8,266 pound record grilled in 2001, but it was still a monster.

It took some work, but the meat was successfully wedged within a gi-normous bun – even though part of the patty’s north side fell a bit!
