The Fall 2021 Milwaukee NARI Home & Remodeling Show gives you a great opportunity to examine and explore your home and remodeling plans as we get into the colder weather and look ahead to 2022. At the show, you can meet 60+ remodeling and home improvement experts! Think about what you might want to do with your home moving forward – perhaps a remodeled kitchen that makes a statement, a spa-like master bathroom maybe a high-efficiency furnace, new casement windows, or updated lighting.
The big theme at the Milwaukee NARI Home & Remodeling Show this year is “Design Through the Decades,” with the following presentations:
The ’60s from Sebastian Design
Sebastian Design portrays the ’60s with a “California mid-century” open concept living room.
Picture a low-slung home set in the Hollywood Hills that features natural materials of wood and stone paired with a complimentary color palette of muted greens and burnt oranges. Now, add in a long, low-backed asymmetrical couch, sleek Noguchi glass coffee table and upholstered Scandinavian chairs with wooden legs to complete the scene.
“The ’60s are a fun period to work in because they were typified by a look that’s clean and simple yet strikingly stylish. In fact, design elements from the ‘60s are still around in today’s open concept homes referred to as mid-century modern,” says Bob Sebastian, MCR, MCKBR, CR, CKBR, UDCP, owner of Sebastian Design in Wauwatosa.
The ’70s from AB&K
AB&K is tapping into the opulent, over-the-top luxury of the ’70s by recreating a high-end bathroom.
And, thanks to Kohler, the room will feature an oversized, drop-in black soaking tub and vintage shampoo sink. Other room appointments include black, shag-inspired carpeting, foil wallpaper, marble-like countertops and a translucent back-lit wall.
“As we were planning the space, I was able to visit Kohler and look through their advertising archives. I found one ad called ‘The Bath’ that really spoke to the flamboyant and bold design we wanted to portray,” says Tracy Grosspietsch, CKBR, UDCP, director of design and sales for AB&K in Greenfield. “Kohler generously allowed us to borrow some of their original pieces so you’ll get to see those in our ’70s space.”
The ’80s from MKE Design Build
MKE Design Build is recreating the hallowed ground of a teenager’s bedroom from the ’80s.
The room is inspired by the classic movie, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off,” and will feature concert posters, a neon sign, VCR, Atari game system and oak desk.
“When we started planning our space, we realized many of those who are attending the show were teens during the ’80s so we want-ed to take them back to how their bedroom may have looked,” says Michelle Swier, co-owner and senior designer at MKE Design Build in St. Francis.
The ’90s from Gabor Design Build Gabor Design Build is using two classic TV shows, “Home Improvement” and “Roseanne”, as their inspiration for a typical ’90s family room.
“The ’90s were about family and comfortable living so that’s what you’ll see in our space,” says Peter Jensen of Gabor Design Build in Germantown.
True to the time, the room will feature the one furniture item that overshadowed the decade – the extremely large oak entertainment center. A plaid couch, glass-topped coffee table with brass legs and comfy décor items complete the room. “In reality, once you had the large entertainment center, there wasn’t enough room for much else,” adds Jensen.
The 00s from Renovations Group
Renovations Group is creating a living space inspired by an Italian villa in the Tuscan countryside and the 2003 film Under the Tuscan Sun.
“The 2000’s brought a rapid rise of technology and reality TV along with the desire to escape it all into the Tuscan countryside,” says Bryan Ward, CKBR, Design Consultant Manager of the Renovations Group, Inc. “We saw a rise in rich, sunbaked earthy tones, rustic elements, and Italian influences providing warmth and comfort during this time.”
The space will provide décor full of bronze finishes, warm tones, elaborate tapestries, and brown furnishings.
Plus, a Selfie Space From the 10s where you can take a photo inside a modern day living room to remember your visit. The State Trunk Tour does not recommend duck lips in the photos, even if they are for Instagram.
Whatever it might be, the NARI Home & Remodeling Show at the Wisconsin Products Pavilion at State Fair Park is the place to gather ideas, inspiration and expert advice from true home improvement professionals. More than 60 NARI Milwaukee exhibitors will be on hand to answer questions, make recommendations and provide homeowners with guidance, solutions, and creative suggestions.
Participating exhibitors cover the gamut of remodeling and home improvement experts – ranging from design/build firms to specialized contractors for all areas the home, roofing, gutters, windows, doors, HVAC, plumbing, and more.
Tickers to the Milwaukee NARI Home & Remodeling Show are $8 online, $10 at the door; Seniors 60+ are also $8 at the door, kids 17 and under are free. Active military, retired military, veterans, first responders, and medical personnel get free admission as well.
You’ll find the pavilion on the Wisconsin State Fair Park grounds in West Allis, just south of I-94 and U.S. 18, bordered on the west by Highway 181/84th Street and on the south by Highway 59/Greenfield Avenue. Port Washington, which calls itself “Your Home Port” for a reason, it’s gorgeous in that downtown area and along the marina, hosts the annual Port Washington Fall Festival on Saturday, October 9th from 11am to 4pm. It’s a “two-fer”, though – 9:30am to 4pm it’s also Love Our Great Lakes Day.
First, the Port Washington Fall Festival celebrates the autumnal season right downtown with a farmer’s market, live music, great food and drinks, even a Fall Family Run along Franklin & Grand in downtown Port. The shops up and down the downtown streets will be ready with their offerings, and of course checking out the harbor area, Rotary Park, the marina, Coal Dock Park, Inventors Brewpub, and more are must-stops when you’re down there. The Fall Festival begins at 11am and runs full force until 4pm, with plenty of fun to follow – stick around and enjoy!

Enjoy this once-a-year chance to get an up close and personal look at some of Southeastern Wisconsin’s finest artists and the spaces in which they work. Presented by the Cedarburg Artists Guild, the Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour is celebrating 39 years of offering art enthusiasts a chance to visit the studio spaces of 50 members. Visit the studios and get a glimpse into their creative process. The art tour is always held on the second full weekend of October, so here in 2021 it runs Friday, October 8th through Sunday, October 10th. The artists will be creating art during the event and are happy to explain their artistic process and inspirations.
The Tour is FREE. Your tour begins anywhere YOU want to visit. No tickets, No reservations.
Plan your own tour itinerary! Opt for a rural drive between locations encompassing the fall splendor of rural Wisconsin: Farm fields, pumpkin patches, Lake Michigan shoreline, picturesque small towns and even an historic wooden covered bridge. Or, if you aren’t in the mood for a leisurely drive, there is easy access between most of the spaces. The studio spaces are as unique and varied as the art. A spare bedroom in a suburban ranch home, an industrial garage, a 19th century barn, an 1850‘s stone mill, a walkout basement, or a tent are all creative spaces where sculpture, jewelry, photography, pottery, blacksmithing, woodworking, weaving, stain glass, encaustics, collage, prints, paintings in all mediums and styles, and fiber arts are brought to life. This is your chance to purchase a unique piece of art directly from the artist along with its “story of creation”. Please be prepared to wear a mask in some of their spaces.
Look for the red arrows
While on the tour, be sure to watch for the red arrows to direct you towards the open studios. Get a map of the studios here!
Highway 57’s historic route (now Green Bay Road and Washington Streets) cut right through Cedarburg; Highway 60 is just to the north and Highway 181 is just to the west. I-43 is several miles east; use County C or W to access Cedarburg from there!

Summerfest 2021 rolls on into its final weekend! It’s the “World’s Largest Music Festival” on Milwaukee’s lakefront, and after the pandemic-related cancellation epidemic in 2020, it’s been back! (Thought there are COVID-19 related protocols.) Typically consisting of 11 days of concerts and fun across a 12-day span, you and nearly 900,000 of your closest friends can enjoy over 1,000 performances from nearly 800 acts on the 75-acre Maier Festival Park grounds.
In 2021, Summerfest implemented a new type of schedule: shows and events across three summer weekends, all Thursday – Saturday with a “Wednesday Weekend Kickoff Concert” at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater the evening prior each week. The dates will be in September this year to maximize the possibility of the COVID vaccine making it safer for a bigger gathering. The dates are September 2-4, 9-11, and 16-18, 2021.
Summerfest dates back to 1968 and has since become the backdrop for the music industry’s hottest stars, emerging talent and local favorites to create unforgettable live music experiences in a world-class festival setting. Running along Milwaukee’s lakefront nestled within downtown, Discovery World, I-794, and Lake Michigan, Summerfest offers not only music but over 45 food and beverage vendors, four marketplaces offering crafts and wares from all over the world, interactive exhibits, and just cool general fun.
Due to the increasing spread of COVID-19 including the Delta variant and in part of the requirements from many bands and their staff, Summerfest is requiring the following for entry: a) proof of having had the COVID-19 vaccine, or b) proof of a negative COVID-19 test within the previous 72 hours of your entry. Those who have purchased tickets to show previously are eligible for a refund if they now choose not to attend a show, within certain timeframes. Full information and details are here.
Summerfest lineups by Stage, Date & Time, moving from south to north:
Watch for new announcements, see Summerfest.com for more lineups the timeliest way possible!
Summerfest Tickets
Single Day Ticketsrun $23 per day, you can print them at home or put them on your mobile. These tickets are good for the entire grounds and any show with the exception of the American Family Insurance Amphitheater shows.
A US Cellular Power Pass, which runs $100 and gets you in ALL 9 DAYS of the festival, with the exception of the American Family Insurance Amphitheater shows.
A 6-Day Pass, which gets you in for 6 of 9 days of Summerfest – you choose your 6 days. It runs $75
A US Cellular 3-Day Pass, which for $57 gets you in to 3 of 9 days of Summerfest, you choose which three.
Parking lots are available just to the west of the grounds and throughout downtown Milwaukee and the Historic Third Ward. The Milwaukee County Transit System also offers “freeway flyer” express buses to and from the grounds from numerous Park & Ride lots in the metro area.
The Summerfest Grounds can be accessed directly via I-794, U.S. 18, and Highway 32. I-43/94 and Highways 38, 59, and 145 also bring you within a mile of it – which is how far away some people park! Either way, it’s one of the greatest music festivals on the planet and a definite State Trunk Tour recommendation.

Dick Leinenkugel and State Trunk Tour founder Eric Paulsen at Oktoberfest in Chippewa Falls.

In Superior, check out the Great Northern Classic Rodeo September 3-5, 2021! This is an MRA/URA-sanctioned professional rodeo, including saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping, bareback riding, cowgirl’s barrel racing, bull riding. Other events include a 5K walk/run Saturday morning, the Miracle rodeo on Sunday morning, children’s games during all performances and numerous food/merchandise vendors. Great fun for the entire family!
U.S. 2 and 53, and Highways 13,35, and 105 bring you to Superior. Yee-ha!! The Great Northern Classic Rodeo takes place on the Douglas County Fairgrounds, right along Highway 35/Tower Avenue.
Tickets for the Great Northern Classic Rodeo are $14 in advance, $15 at the gate, $16 for reserved advance seats for adults; kids 6-12 are $7 in advance, $8 at the gate, and kids 5 and under are FREE. Seniors (65+) and Military have additional discounts, get details and purchase tickets here.
Great Northern Classic Rodeo details:
Bareback Bronc Riding The rigging is a wide leather belt that fits around the horse’s midsection, just behind its shoulders. The rider holds onto its stiff leather handle and leans back as far as his arm will allow while positioning his heels over the horse’s shoulders for the first jump out of the chute. This is called “marking the animal out.” The rider’s free hand cannot come in contact with the horse during the 8-second ride. Each time the horse kicks, the cowboy brings his knees toward his body, keeping his heels against the horse and his toes turned out (called “spurring), then stretches his legs out again. SPONSORED BY BARKERS ISLAND INN
Saddle Bronc Riding This requires the cowboy to sit upright in a saddle on the horse, holding onto a buck rein that is attached only to the horse’s halter and move his legs from the knees down in a back-and-forth motion resembling the movement of a rocking chair. His feet must remain in the stirrups with his toes turned out. He must mark the horse out by keeping his heels in the well of the horse’s neck on the first jump and may not touch himself or the horse with his free hand. The most physically grueling of all the rodeo events.
Breakaway Roping This requires the contestant to rope a calf in the quickest time, with the rope breaking away from the saddle horn when the calf is caught and pulls the “slack” out of the rope. The catch is considered clean if it passes over the calf’s head and is pulled taut anywhere on its body-even one heel! Times can often be as quick as just a few seconds. A barrier is stretched to allow the calf a “head start” and 10 second penalty applies if the cowgirl starts too early.
Steer Wrestling The object of steer wrestling, also called “bulldogging,” is to lean onto the back of a steer, catch it from behind the horns, quickly slide from the horse to the ground to stop the steer’s forward momentum and wrestle the animal to the ground with all four of its legs pointing in the same direction. The bulldogger is assisted by a hazer, who rides along the right side of the steer to keep it running straight. The hazer is extremely important and can play a great part in whether the rider “gets down on his steer.”
Barrel Racing A speed event where times are measured in thousandths of a second with electric timers. Barrel racing is set on a cloverleaf pattern marked by three 55-gallon drums placed on the two sides and far end of the arena. Beginning and ending from the same point, the rider goes first to either the right or left barrel, circles it, crosses to the other side and circles that barrel, rides to the far barrel and circles it, then rides full speed back across the starting line. At one world’s final rodeo, the world title was decided by 1/100th of a second in the last run of the last performance! SPONSORED BY BERNICKS PEPSI
Team Roping A header ropes the animal (around both horns, the neck or half the head) and wraps the rope around the saddle horn (“dallying”) to tow the steer and position it for the heeler to rope both back legs (roping just one leg earns a five second penalty). The contest is not over until the heeler catches the legs and dallies, the header has turned to face the heeler, and both ropes are tight. This action is used often on ranches to this date; it allows a steer to be handled in the open pasture if it has been injuried and needs to be doctored or branded.
Bull Riding Holding a flat, braided “bull rope” that has been placed around the animal just behind its shoulders, the cowboy threads one end of the rope around his gloved hand and pulls it taut. During the ride, he tries to keep his body close to his hand with his legs slightly forward toes out and heels planted firmly in the bull’s side. However, the loose hide generally found on rodeo bulls makes them extremely difficult to ride and the size of these animals magnifies the possibility of injury. The rider cannot touch his free hand to himself or the bull during the eight second time, and as in bronc and saddle riding, two judges score his ride and the performance of the animal. Whew! That’s a lot of bull. Literally. Enjoy the Great Northern Classic Rodeo!

Milwaukee NARI Home & Remodeling Show
The big theme at the Milwaukee NARI Home & Remodeling Show this year is “Design Through the Decades,” with the following presentations:
Francis.
Gabor Design Build is using two classic TV shows, “Home Improvement” and “Roseanne”, as their inspiration for a typical ’90s family room.

Port Washington Fall Festival & Love Our Great Lakes Day
Port Washington, which calls itself “Your Home Port” for a reason, it’s gorgeous in that downtown area and along the marina, hosts the annual Port Washington Fall Festival on Saturday, October 9th from 11am to 4pm.
For nature and water lovers, Love Our Great Lakes Day offers a detailed examination of the waters of Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes, with speakers and afternoon field site visits of restoration work at Mineral Springs Creek and Birchwood Hills, a bird hike through Coal Dock Park led by Observatory staff, music by the Green Sails, tours through the Heart of the Harbor and the Port Washington Exploreum, and more.

Covered Bridge Studio Art Tour
The Covered Bridge Art Studio Tour

Great Northern Classic Rodeo
In Superior, check out the Great Northern Classic Rodeo September 3-5, 2021! This is an MRA/URA-sanctioned professional rodeo, including saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling, calf roping, team roping, bareback riding, cowgirl’s barrel racing, bull riding. Other events include a 5K walk/run Saturday morning, the Miracle rodeo on Sunday morning, children’s games during all performances and numerous food/merchandise vendors. Great fun for the entire family!
U.S. 2 and 53, and Highways 13, 35, and 105 bring you to Superior.
