Just outside Elkhorn in the fields of Walworth County, you’ll find Apple Barn Orchard & Winery, where you can pick fruit on the farm or drink it after it’s been squashed and aged into wine. The Country Store & Bakery at Apple Barn Orchard sells fresh fruits, jams, jellies, maple syrup, butters, salsas, Wisconsin cheese, recipe books, candles, cards… and awesome cider donuts and caramel apples.
During prime apple picking season – which tends to be fall – you can line up in the orchard across the street from the store and winery and pick apples to your heart’s content. You have different size options and just pay for the bag. Different styles of apples and other fruits are available based on how the crops are progressing, and they’ll tell you when you pay. A Tree Maze also delights children and adults alike, while food trucks often ply the grounds in front of the store. The winery section can craft your samples at the outdoor bar if you choose the great outdoors, where live music sometimes accompanies the action.
The winery focuses on – no surprise here – fruit wines. Apple wines, blueberry and blackberry wines, and spiced wines tend to be the favorites, but they offer a decent variety here. Plenty of accessories to go with your home decor – especially wine-oriented decor – adorn the walls and shelves inside the Apple Barn store.
Apple Barn Orchard & Winery Hours are Tuesday – Saturday, 10am – 6pm; Sundays, 11am – 5pm.
You’ll find Apple Barn Orchard & Winery in the Walworth County town of Sugar Creek, west of Highway 67 and U.S. 12, just north of Elkhorn via Sugar Creek Road. Highway 89 provides access from the west, too. Duesterbeck’s Brewing Company is nearby too, a lot of people like to do a two-fer on a nice weekend day.
