The Pardeeville Watermelon Festival celebrates the fact that watermelon is delicious. But what do you do with the seeds? In Pardeeville, they reward you for spitting them out as far as you can! The longtime home of the U.S. Watermelon Speed-Eating and Seed-Spitting Championships, come and enjoy this fun festival in Pardeeville’s Chandler Park Saturday, September 10th! This festival has been taking place since 1968 and they make the most of it. Free watermelon is included (the seeds are free too) and there are contests for all ages. Watermelon carvings become pretty interesting, too. The Pardeeville Watermelon Festival officially opens at 10am in Chandler Park. There will be an Open Air Market, concessions, and rides at the Midway all day. The Open Air Market showcases art and craft vendors from all over the area, plus a flea market and commercial vendors such Avon, Scentsy, and Tupperware. The market runs from 10am until about 3pm. Typically there are about 30-40 vendors.
The Watermelon carving contest makes for some interesting creations in Pardeeville.
Wayne the Wizard will be there to provide children’s entertainment, there’s a free Hay Dive at noon, and the championship events for the U.S. Watermelon Speed-Eating and Seed-Spitting Championships begin at 1:30pm. Find out more about the actual speed-eating and seed-spitting events, including records like the 61 feet, inches one entrant spat a seed in 1988, here. It’s a fun and unique thing to watch!
Yes, they seriously spit seeds from watermelons as far as they can. There are contests for multiple age categories.
You’ll find Pardeeville along Highway 22, where it meets Highway 44 in Columbia County.

It begins with a 5K run and walk, which you can participate in in person along a twisty, turny course in the park, or participate in virtually from wherever you are. Why the 5th of September? Hey, all roads lead to Tomah, take one of them (I-90, I-94, US 12, Highway 16, Highway 21, or Highway 131… we weren’t kidding about “all roads”) Saturday, September 14th and check out the Tomah Rotary Kegs Corks & Forks Festival! It was formerly the Tomah Beer & Sausage Festival, but with more food, wine, and more being added, a new name was created. We’re cool with that.
Kegs Corks & Forks takes place from 5-8pm at Tomah Recreational Park’s Ice Hockey Rink, although partying will continue well past that. There will be a Smoked Meat Competition where the competitors are the Tomah Police Department vs. the Monroe County Sheriff’s Department, craft beer sampling, wine tasting, plenty of area food vendors offering samples and food for sale, along with prizes, raffles, drawings, and a post-event concert featuring Lassos and Lace followed by Jay Allen.
Tickets range from $40 for general admission, which starts at 6pm; $60 for VIP admission, which begins at 5pm; you can also get concert-only tickets for $20 ahead of time or $25 the day of the show. You can buy tickets ahead of time here.
Tomah is the seat of Monroe County and the place where all the major roads meet and split. I-90 & I-94 converge here, as do their pre-Interstate compatriots, U.S. 12 and Highway 16. Highway 21 skims Tomah to the north and Highway 131 comes in from the Driftless Area south.
This is the start of “Cranberry Country” too, so check out the nearby bogs, sample fresh cranberries and all kinds of tasty foods made with this remarkable little fruit, and explore the town while you’re there!

Seymour Burgerfest & Balloon Rally celebrates the “Home of the Hamburger”! Seymour is where the hamburger was reportedly invented by Charlie Nagreen in 1885, improvising the sandwich while selling meatballs at the Outagamie County Fair. Burgerfest celebrates this momentous creation with a big Balloon Rally Friday night, the World’s Largest Hamburger Parade, the Bun Run, Kids’ Run, music, kids’ games, the Burger Eating Contest and the Giant Ketchup Slide! The Car Show, Railroad Depot and Community Museum are included with the Saturday entrance fee.a 190-pound hamburger they grill up right there, the burger-eating contest, and you can even take a plunge on the ketchup slide!
The Car Show, viewing the model railroad at the Railroad Depot, and seeing the world’s largest hamburger memorabilia exhibit at the Seymour Community Museum are included with the Saturday Burger Fest entrance fee. Downtown Seymour Saturday events cost only $3 in advance and $5 at the gate. Children 12 and under are admitted free with paid adult on Saturday downtown. Wristbands are available from Seymour merchants Don’s Quality Market, Seymour Public Library, Seymour Community Museum. Or, get your Tickets in Advance here.
During a previous Burgerfest, Seymour celebrants cooked up the World’s Largest Hamburger – according to Guinness – at 8,266 pounds!
Seymour’s Version of the Hamburger Invention:
“In 1885, Charles N. Nagreen, a young lad of 15, came to the Seymour Fair to sell meatballs. When he realized people wanted to walk around the fair grounds and eat, he flattened a meatball between two slices of bread and called it a ‘hamburger.’ This was the first time the hamburger sandwich was produced and sold.”
The Guinness Book of World Records noted that Seymour is where the “World’s Largest Hamburger” was cooked – right there on the Charlie Grill. In August of 2001, a 8,266 pound hamburger was cooked up and served to over 13,000 people.
The State Trunk Tour has been there; amidst the bands, the model railroad museum and hungry and thirsty festival goers milling about under the statue of Charles “Hamburger Charlie” Nagreen (the hamburger’s inventor), was the main attraction: a 60-pound hamburger. Sure, it’s a fraction of the monstrous 8,266 pound record grilled in 2001, but it was still a monster. The 60 pound mound of meat, hot off the grill. It took some work, but the meat was successfully wedged within a gi-normous bun – even though part of the patty’s north side fell a bit!
Check out all the fun where Highways 54 and 55 meet in Seymour!

Although the dates used to move around, it now takes place every Memorial Day weekend – this year, that means May 24-27, 2019.
That’s a lot of chocolate. Good!
Plenty of exhibits on chocolate, demonstrations on chocolate-making, and samples highlight the main theme of the festivals. Music from national and regional acts, family events, and more add to the fun. Need a sugar rush? There’s a cupcake-eating contest if you’re in a hurry for it!
It really is chocolate Jenga…
There’s also a Rotary Carnival, a Chocolate City Bike Ride, fireworks, and a Memorial Day Veterans Day Parade. Chocolate Jenga is a crowd-pleaser – and suspenseful at times! Chocolate carvings, treats, and more add to the tasty fun.
The Burlington Festival Grounds are just off Milwaukee Street (City Highways 36 & 83) along Maryland Avenue near the Fox River and Riverside Park, northeast of downtown. City Highway 11 just to the south, and Highway 142 approaches from the southeast. Tomah Kegs, Corks & Forks
Tomah Kegs Corks & Forks Address:
Recreation Park (just off Highway 16)
1625 Butts Avenue
Tomah, WI 54660
Website
You’ll find Recreation Park in Tomah just off Highway 16, once the main highway to La Crosse before I-90 was built. Best exit from I-90 to access Recreation Park is via Exit 41 (Highway 131), then west on Highway 16 to Butts Avenue and the Park.

Seymour Burgerfest
