St. Patrick’s Day Parade, Milwaukee

The St. Patrick’s Day Parade Milwaukee winds through downtown from noon until about 1:30pm on Saturday, March 9th!  It’s the 53rd Annual Shamrock Club of Wisconsin St. Patrick’s Day Parade with live Irish music, dance, food, beverages and more all afternoon. We’re pretty sure you can find corned beef, for example…

*** STT Tidbit: Milwaukee’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back to 1843; it’s the 6th oldest such parade in the nation. **

Check out one of the best St Patrick’s Day Parades in the country and the grandest parade in Wisconsin. The Parade will feature 140+ units and includes local politicians and celebrities, floats, bagpipe and marching bands and Irish and Celtic organizations. It’s the perfect event for the whole family, because on St. Patrick’s Day, everyone is Irish!

Before the parade, there’s an 8:30am mass at St. Patrick’s Church at 723 W. Washington Street just south of downtown. After the parade, the Shamrock Club Post-Parade Party will take place at the Irish Cultural & Heritage Center at 2133 W. Wisconsin Avenue, just west of downtown and the Marquette University campus. It’s Milwaukee’s Largest Family Parade Day Party and features four stages of entertainment. There’s a $2 admission fee ($10 family maximum) and children 10 and younger are free. There will be plenty of food and beverages too!

The parade itself starts at noon on 3rd and Wisconsin and finishes at Water and Highland. It will actually go over portions of U.S. 18 and Highway 32 in the city. I-43/94 and Highways 38, 57, 59, and 145 also bring you within blocks of the parade route.

The Milwaukee St. Patrick’s Day Parade website has full details on all the events. It’s definitely a fun way to spend a Saturday and prepare for St. Patrick’s Day (and week, based on the timing of the parade!)

World’s Longest Weenie Roast

“The World’s Longest Weenie Roast!”

cable_weenieroastlogoThat’s an attention getter, right? Watch winter come to a climactic end as the greatest event on ice wraps up the season. Thousands of Weenie enthusiasts come annually to watch the fastest sleds compete for top speed of the day while eating up those great Klement’s Hot Dogs and drinking down an ice cold Pepsi or Budweiser beer. Watch as dozens of people get the first swim of the year in Lake Namakagon at the Frozen Weenie Polar Bear Plunge, win prizes at the many games and enjoy great music while taking it all in. This event is the highlight of winter and rooms fill up quickly. Don’t miss out on this fantastic family event.

Held to raise funds for the Great Divide Ambulance Service, the Namakagon Volunteer Fire Department and other area charities and not-for-profits, this event holds the record for the longest line of hot dog cookers over one fire in the world. With events like snowmobile speed runs, ice drags, crooked weenie obstacle course, and snow drags all on Lake Namakagon, there is more than enough fun for everyone.

Viewing Area Tips for Eagle Watching In and Around Prairie du Chien (courtesy of their website)
A good spot for eagle viewing is between the Blackhawk Avenue and Washington Street bridges in Prairie du Chien. A large artesian well provides open water. Eagles will perch in trees along the slough. Check the trees along the Mississippi River shore near and across from Lawler Park on St. Feriole Island is another location of eagle activity. The park is west and north of the Blackhawk Avenue bridge. A mounted bird scope for viewing is available (located in back of building) at the Wisconsin Welcome Center/Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce building, 211 S. Main. Enroute to Prairie du Chien watch for eagles soaring or perching in trees in open field areas looking for food.

You can spend the day or several days viewing eagles. You will need appropriate clothing and binoculars. A spotting scope is nice too. Eagle watching begins in the morning about an hour after sunrise. The birds are most active from then until about 3:00PM, feeding in open water areas. Birds can be seen soaring, perching in riverside trees, and sitting on the ice. By late afternoon the birds will be heading for the roost and will not be active unless you are on a flight path to the roost.

The best places to see eagles in the area include the Gordon’s Bay boat landing and Lock and Dam #9, 10 miles north of Prairie du Chien. The boat landing is cleared of snow so eagle watchers can simply park near the ramp facing slightly upstream. Watch for eagles in the big cottonwoods along the Wisconsin shoreline, across the river in trees along the Iowa shoreline, and soaring overhead or over the open water caused by flowing water from the dam. Staying in your vehicle will provide you the best viewing as soaring eagles have been known to come very close to the boat landing with their feeding activity. Eagles will be seen flying and perched in trees along the river as you travel to and from this area from Prairie du Chien.

I-94, I-794, U.S. 18, and Highways 32, 38, and 59 all bring you within blocks to easy access to the city’s new (and gorgeous) arena! Right nearby you’ll find a host of bars and restaurants on Old World Third Street, the classic German restaurant called Mader’s that dates back to 1903, the Usinger’s sausage plant and store that opened in 1880, the Uber Tap Room and Wisconsin Cheese Mart, offering a terrific variety of cheeses you can try and buy, even a great arcade bar called 1983! Just to the northwest in the Pabst complex, check out the newest Milwaukee Brewing Company facility or the Museum of Beer & Brewing. There’s plenty to do in the area as the Arena District is developing quickly.

Blue Mound Candlelight Ski, Hike & Snowshoe

On Saturday, January 5th and/or February 2nd, 2019, spend a night with family and friends at Blue Mound, the highest point in southern Wisconsin. From high atop, they welcome 2019 with the Blue Mound Candlelight Ski, Hike, and Snowshoe event hosted by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park.

A 1 and 2-mile candlelit, wooded loop will be available to ski and a separate 0.75-mile candlelit wooded trail will be available for hikers, snowshoers and leashed pets. Warm up with free hot drinks inside the heated shelter. Hot refreshments, baked goods and shirts will be available for sale. Enjoy the bonfire and free marshmallows for roasting. Guided hikes through the illuminated woods with the park Naturalist will be held at 6 and 7 p.m. The only cost for this fun-filled family event is a daily or annual park sticker, which may be purchased upon entry to the park. For more information or trail conditions, contact the park at 608-437-5711.

Blue Mound Candlelight skis, snowshoe, and hike events are very popular; some attract thousands of visitors on a given night. Given the recent publicity of these events through social media outlets and cool sites like StateTrunkTour.com, and the department’s responsibility to provide a safe recreational experience, access to these events may be restricted at times when parking capacity has been reached.

To reach Blue Mound State Park – which is amazing any time of the year – follow U.S. 18/151 either west from Madison or east from Dodgeville and follow the signs. In the daytime, Blue Mound is easily seen! The park is great to visit throughout the winter, with over 20 miles of trails and breathtaking views across several counties from the lookout towers.

Foot of the Lake Synchronized Skating Classic

Foot of the Lake Synchronized Skating Classic

Fond du Lac literally means “Bottom of the Lake” or “Foot of the Lake” in French, so it’s fitting that this synchronized skating classic takes place here. The city’s Blue Line Family Ice Center hosts nationally competing synchronized skating teams performing all day in both exhibition shows and competition for awards and prizes. Come and enjoy this exciting and beautiful team sport on Saturday, January 5th! This competition will host approximately 85 synchronized skating teams from the East Coast to the West Coast, and of course our favorite places in between, like, you know, Wisconsin. During the rest of the year, the Blue Line Family Ice Center offers other events, hockey, and plenty of opportunities for public skating.

More details on Foot of the Lake are below, including teams and the schedule. You can get to the Blue Line Family Ice Center via Fond du Lac Avenue, the original U.S. 45 through southeastern Fond du Lac. It’s between downtown and the U.S. 151 bypass, not far from the county fairgrounds. I-41 and Highway 23 also bring you close!

East Troy Christmas Train

East Troy Christmas Train

East Troy’s classic electric railroad runs between East Troy and Mukwonago, once part of a much longer interurban line. You can enjoy train rides much of the year, but during the holidays the East Troy Christmas Train makes it extra festive.

The East Troy Christmas Train takes you from the East Troy Depot – which also holds a cool little train museum – to Santa’s workshop located at the Elegant Farmer just outside Mukwonago, pretty much on the Walworth-Waukesha County border along County ES… once the main road (as Highway 15) between Beloit and Milwaukee before I-43 was built. You’ll recognize the “smiley face” on the barn!

At the Elegant Farmer, long known for their great pie and bakery, children can visit Santa and get a photo, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies, and more. The total experience lasts about two hours, including the rides back and forth and an hour at The Elegant Farmer. Boarding is only done at the East Troy Depot and they do recommend advance reservations. Find out more on reserving a space here.

Adult tickets run $18.50. Tickets for Children (3-14) are $16.00, Toddlers (2 and under) are $8.00. Children ages 3 and up receive a gift. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you bring a non-perishable food item with each member of your party, you’ll receive a 10% discount on tickets at the Depot. All donated items will benefit the East Troy Food Pantry. You can buy the tickets in advance at regular price and receive your discount when you arrive at the East Troy Depot with your donated items.

Tickets may be purchased online in advance, or at the Depot starting Saturday, November 24th on Saturdays and Sundays through December 16th. The Depot opens at 8:30am, last ride departs at 3pm.

East Troy Christmas Train rides depart at 9:00am, 1030am, Noon, 1:30pm, and 3pm. If you would prefer to purchase tickets over the phone, call (262) 642-3263; if no one answers, you can leave a message and they’ll return your call.

All of the details and advance ticket purchases can be made on their website.

You can get to the East Troy Depot via Highway 20 or Highway 120, just north I-43. It’s called Church Street just north of the historic town square.

Christmas Train rides run Saturday and Sunday, November 24-25, December 1-2, 8-9, and 15-16.
