Tyranena notes itself as “Legendary Wisconsin Beer,” calling back to the mysterious stone structures and effigy mounds that border – and are submerged under – today’s Rock Lake… the original name of which lives on in the name of this brewery.
Tyranena began operations in late 1999, quite early on in Wisconsin’s craft beer renaissance. Over time, the brewery has grown to a production capacity of about 45,000 barrels annually in Lake Mills, located just northeast of town, just about one mile east of Highway 89 and within earshot of I-94.
Beers from Tyranena include some colorful names: Bitter Woman IPA, Rocky’s Revenge Brown, Three Beaches Honey Blonde, Headless Man Amber Alt, Sheep Shagger Scotch Ale, Down N’ Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, Chief Blackhawk Porter, and more. A group of beers referred to as “Brewers Gone Wild!” include offerings like Tapping the Sugarbush, an Imperial Maple Porter aged in Bourbon barrels; the Coco Poco, a Coconut Porter aged in rum barrels; the Kisser’s Monday Night Special, a Bourbon Barrel-Aged Double Stout; and the PINK Fruit Tart, a Sour Wheat Ale with cherry and pomegranate. For non-beer drinkers in your group, they also serve hard lemonade, hard seltzer, non-alcoholic brews, root beer, and other sodas.
While available in stores throughout the state, you can best sample the wide variety of their beers in their Lake Mills Tasting Room. Along with a 35-seat dog-friendly bar area with a variety of games and occasional live music, a summertime outdoor patio offers more accommodations. Both the Tasting Room and patio are dog-friendly.
Brewery Tours are also available every Saturday. Yes, they’re free and no reservations are required. Certain Saturdays are designated as “Technical,” with brewers on hand. Which dates offer those? You can find that out here.
