Pardeeville Watermelon Festival & U.S. Watermelon Speed-Eating & Seed-Spitting Championships

Pardeeville Watermelon Festival logoThe Pardeeville Watermelon Festival celebrates the fact that watermelon is delicious. But what do you do with the seeds? In Pardeeville, they reward you for spitting them out as far as you can! The longtime home of the U.S. Watermelon Speed-Eating and Seed-Spitting Championships, come and enjoy this fun festival in Pardeeville’s Chandler Park Saturday, September 10th! This festival has been taking place since 1968 and they make the most of it. Free watermelon is included (the seeds are free too) and there are contests for all ages. Watermelon carvings become pretty interesting, too. The Pardeeville Watermelon Festival officially opens at 10am in Chandler Park. There will be an Open Air Market, concessions, and rides at the Midway all day. The Open Air Market showcases art and craft vendors from all over the area, plus a flea market and commercial vendors such Avon, Scentsy, and Tupperware. The market runs from 10am until about 3pm. Typically there are about 30-40 vendors.

Paramount Music Festival

Paramount Music FestivalAre you aware of the great music history of Blues, Jazz, R&B, gospel, country, classical and more in… Ozaukee County? The Paramount Music Festival is! Yes, Grafton and Port Washington were music hotspots back in the day, hosting musicians and their studio sessions at Paramount Records. Thousands of recordings were made and millions of records were pressed in Grafton, laying groundwork for the most popular music genres to ever come out of this country from 1917 until 1932.

For a decade and a half, 78 rpm records were pressed and distributed to the nation, allowing artists such as Lawrence Welk, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Tom Dorsey and Louis Armstrong to inspire future music generations and lay the seeds for the R&B and Rock ‘N Roll Eras. Between 1929 and 1932 alone, over 1,600 songs were recorded in Grafton at a make-shift studio in the Wisconsin Chair Factory; the output accounted for about 1/4 of the so-called “race records” of the era. The musicians often came up from Milwaukee or Chicago by train, recorded in Grafton, and stayed overnights in Port Washington where Paramount and the Wisconsin Chair Company had their offices. So many major and influential musicians cut records here that it’s an official stop on the Mississippi Blues Trail!

Paramount Music Festival, Port WashingtonOn July 22-23, 2022, the Paramount Music Festival celebrates Paramount Records and all the music it produced. Two days of incredible live music, food and family fun with local, regional and national musicians take the stage to celebrate the history of Paramount Records. A full schedule is below.

Budweiser Dairyland Super Nationals Truck & Tractor Pull in Tomah, WisconsinThe annual Budweiser Dairyland Super National Truck & Tractor Pull is back in action at Tomah’s Recreation Park Thursday, June 23rd through Saturday, June 25th, 2022! Since 1976, Tomah has hosted this massive event which is a premier stop on the NTPA Championship Pulling Circuit. It draws people from across the nation, even some other parts of the world. As they say, “Not Just a Pull… An Experience.”

This experience includes pulling of semis, 4WD, 2WD, diesel trucks, unlimited tractors, modified tractors, super stock tractors, mini rods and super farm tractors. The double track is built of clay laced with lime, which prevents the surface from becoming too slick or too hard. It is known as a tough, power track, able to withstand the speed and pounding of today’s muscle machines. The tracks were completely renovated in 2007.

You can also check out a wide variety of food vendors and exhibits, and arts and crafts show, and a flea market. Camping is available on site.

For the kids, the Full Pullers Kids Club proves to be a great time! Kids are invited to spend Friday morning from 9:00am until showtime at the pull to view our pit area, receive a free t-shirt, and meet drivers for autographs. Food and refreshments will be provided to the kids. Kids (age 14 and under) will also get a free ticket to the Friday 11:00a.m. show. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Renk Seed and WCOW-FM, 97.1 (the station calls itself, of course, “The Cow”) sponsors this event. Listen to WCOW 97.1 Radio or call the Pull office at 608-372-2081 for more info!

Hartford Classic Car Show

A peek of Main Street during the Hartford Classic Car Show in Hartford, Wisconsin

The 12th annual Hartford Classic Car Show is back for 2021 and it runs Saturday, May 21st this year! Check out some amazing classic cars on display on Main Street (Highway 83) from 10am – 4pm, with an awards ceremony at 3:30. Cars and trucks are categorized by era:

  • 1900-1939
  • 1940-1954
  • 1955-1964
  • 1965-1969
  • 1970-1979
  • 1980-2001

Trucks will be categorized as pre-1960 and post-1960.

Those wanting to display their cars and trucks can enter for $15 on Saturday the 21st.

If you’re visiting the Hartford Classic Car Show, you can enjoy the beautiful vehicles and explore many more at the Wisconsin Automotive Museum a block away. The Museum features some true classics, including Wisconsin-made brands like Nash, American Motors, and the Hartford-made Kissel models. The Southeastern Wisconsin Short Track Hall of Fame is also there, plus other race cars, real trains, and a huge Lionel layout that will “wow” any car or train buff.

Of course, you can also visit The Mineshaft, the famous Wisconsin restaurant that serves as one of the state’s largest, with a huge game room on the second floor. Other great shops can be found up and down Main Street (Highway 83) and some of the nearby blocks as well. Scoop de Ville, for example, is a great old-fashioned sweet treat shop that supports the car show and you’ll find them right on Main Street.

Other sights in Hartford include the beautiful Willowbrook Park, which has classic stone buildings and bridges right along Highway 60/Sumner Street. The Schwartz Ballroom on the city’s south side is a classic dance hall, built in 1928 with a rich history of hosting events, musicians, and more. And of course, Pike Lake State Park is on Hartford’s eastern edge as part of the Kettle Moraine State Forest. Weather should be great for all kinds of fun!

Of course, Highways 60 and 83 meet in downtown Hartford and they’re the best ways to get there. Hartford is less than 10 minutes west of I-41, Highway 164, and Highway 175.
