On Saturday, January 5th and/or February 2nd, 2019, spend a night with family and friends at Blue Mound, the highest point in southern Wisconsin. From high atop, they welcome 2019 with the Blue Mound Candlelight Ski, Hike, and Snowshoe event hosted by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park.
A 1 and 2-mile candlelit, wooded loop will be available to ski and a separate 0.75-mile candlelit wooded trail will be available for hikers, snowshoers and leashed pets. Warm up with free hot drinks inside the heated shelter. Hot refreshments, baked goods and shirts will be available for sale. Enjoy the bonfire and free marshmallows for roasting. Guided hikes through the illuminated woods with the park Naturalist will be held at 6 and 7 p.m. The only cost for this fun-filled family event is a daily or annual park sticker, which may be purchased upon entry to the park. For more information or trail conditions, contact the park at 608-437-5711.
Blue Mound Candlelight skis, snowshoe, and hike events are very popular; some attract thousands of visitors on a given night. Given the recent publicity of these events through social media outlets and cool sites like StateTrunkTour.com, and the department’s responsibility to provide a safe recreational experience, access to these events may be restricted at times when parking capacity has been reached.
To reach Blue Mound State Park – which is amazing any time of the year – follow U.S. 18/151 either west from Madison or east from Dodgeville and follow the signs. In the daytime, Blue Mound is easily seen! The park is great to visit throughout the winter, with over 20 miles of trails and breathtaking views across several counties from the lookout towers.

Ready for some Footy?? That’s the nickname for Australian Rules Football, and the US wing of the Aussie League is bringing the Australian Football National Championships to Racine County!
Australian Football (nicknamed “Footy”) has some significant differences with American Football. The field is oval-shaped and about twice the length of an American football field. Teams of 18 players can move the ball using any parts of their bodies. They’re not wearing the football pads and uniforms that American football players do – they dress like soccer or rugby players. Any player can score by kicking, hitting, or running the ball through the goal. Aussie Football games consist of four 20-minute quarters, time continues to roll and more time is “added on” if play is delayed – similar to soccer – and players can move freely around the field and sub in or out at any time. Oh, and a player advancing the ball must bounce the ball or touch it to the ground every 15 meters. So in a sense, there’s a basketball move involved in this too. Get more details on Australian Rules Football here.
The USAFL (United States Australian Football League) governs the sports in the US and sanctions men’s and women’s competitions among over 35 clubs across the country, with over 2,000 players participating. About a dozen of these teams have advanced to play in this championship tournament in Racine County; teams from Houston, Denver, Minneapolis-St. Paul and more will be descending here to compete for it all.
Matches start at 9am Saturday, October 13th; finals are scheduled to begin around 5:30pm. Spectator admission is FREE!
You’ll find the SCoRe complex just off County K between I-41/94 and Highway 38 in Franksville. It’s about two miles north of Highway 20.

The Pettit National Ice Center hosts the 2018 US Olympic Long Track Speedskating Trials now through Sunday, January 7! The Pettit is one of only two official US Olympic training facilities in the United States, and the Trials have formally returned to the Oval here for the first time since 1998. The timing is impeccable – and also quite coincidental – with the Pettit’s 25th Anniversary.
For six nights you can experience the best in US speedskating competition as they get primed to pursue Gold in the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea. As you watch these incredible athletes at the US Olympic Long Track Speedskating Trials, enjoy food and beverages and plenty of activities in the “fan zone” tent which will be located just east of the front entrance to the Center, facing I-94.
Opportunities for VIP experiences and access will make events memorable for groups, companies, and organizations. During the days before, during, and after the Trials, please note that the Center’s normal activities, such as running on the outside of the quarter-mile oval, will change. Please check the activity schedules closely for hours and changes.
You can purchase tickets here or at the Pettit itself. Their front office is open 9am-8pm seven days a week. You can also purchase “walk-up” tickets the day of each event; these will be available on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Pettit is right along Highway 181/84th Street at I-94, just north of Highway 59/Greenfield Avenue, south of U.S. 18/Bluemound Road, and east of I-41/U.S. 45/I-894 on the Milwaukee-West Allis border.

US Olympic Long Track Trials

Walleye Weekend, Fond du Lac
This free family festival in Fondy features fish – with an emphasis on walleye (and that was all the alliteration we could work in one line.)

It’s a fun outdoor festival along the southern shore of Lake Winnebago. U.S. 41, 45, 151 and Highways 23 and 175 all bring you to Fond Du Lac!
