Fox River Brewing Company

Fox River Brewing Company started up in 1995, an early entry in the craft beer resurgence across the country. It started with Fratello’s Waterfront Restaurant in Oshkosh and expanded to Fox River Brewery & Restaurant in Appleton’s Fox River Mall in 1997. Today, both locations are called Fox River Brewing Company – the Oshkosh location is “On the Water,” the Appleton location is “At the Mall.”

Fox River Brewing’s signature beers, brewed in their Oshkosh and Appleton facilities, include the Blu Bobber, a Golden Ale with blueberry hints (and sometimes even real blueberries added in the pint glass); Red Bobber, an Amber Ale with a raspberry hint; Reel it In IPA; Marble Eye Scottish Ale with a malty finish; and 2 Dams Unfiltered Blonde Ale. The tap designs mimic fishing reels, some of which can even be hand-cranked – though it’s frowned upon. Other specialty brews are offered across three categories: Hoppy, Specialty/Seasonal, and Dark.

Fox River also brews a hard seltzer in the form of their White Bobber Cherry Apple, giving a nice option for people who don’t like beer. Judge as you will.

The Oshkosh (“on the water”) location offers the restaurant and a spacious indoor Tap Room, plus a terrific outdoor patio along the Fox River right at the southeastern end of Lake Butte des Morts. Highway 21 meets U.S. 45 nearby, and the large new bridge carrying I-41 across the lake is visible. The patio is great in summer for enjoying their beers, live music, and occasionally some volleyball an boating activities. Watching the bascule bridge that carries Highway 21 go and up and down can be fun, too, especially if you’ve had several beers.

The Appleton (“at the mall”) location is along the west side of the Fox River Mall, and easily accessible without going inside the mall itself. It’s right off I-41 at Highway 125/College Avenue; you can also access it from Highway 96/Wisconsin Avenue.
