In downtown Mauston you’ll find Gravity Box Brewing Company, which opened in the city’s former Opera House building in 2021.
The name “Gravity Box” came from a friend of the founders mentioning on the drive to where they were, he got stuck behind a “gravity box,” referring to farm equipment that hauls grain – often slowly – on rural roads. “Gravity” also refers to the ABV (alcohol by volume) in beer, based in part on how much sugar is in your wort. So the name just fit when they heard the term.
Beers at Gravity Box during our last visit include:
- Maugh’s Town Light, a light Lager
- Hoppy Little Accidents, an IPA
- Belgian Pale, a Pale Ale
- Is It Hoppy? West Coast IPA
- Collin’s Nitro Cold Brew
- Get In Loser, We’re Going Apple Picking, a Belgian Pale Ale with apple
- La Falta, a Mexican Coffee Stour
- Thank You For Being A Friend, a Fruited Sout
- Udder Nonsense, a Cream Ale
Along with their craft brews, Gravity Box can make up cheese and meat boards, focusing on the cheeses produced at Mauston’s own Carr Valley Cheese Factory. They also have a sister business in their location called Collin’s Coffees, so if you’re going by the morning and it’s too early for beer, you can pick up some coffee.
Gravity Box Brewing is located right along Mauston’s main downtown strip, in a building that was rebuilt in the late 1960s on the site of the town’s original Opera House, which was constructed in 1875. Gravity Box itself opened in February of 2021. It’s right on State Street, which is U.S. 12/Highway 16 a short distance north of the Highway 58 and Highway 82 intersection. I-90/94 is less than two miles to the east, easily accessible via Exit #69 (Highway 82).
