Silarian Vineyards opened in the hills near Valders and Cato in Manitowoc County in 2019, right up along the Niagara Escarpment. Their vineyards cover acreage that varies by over 100 feet in elevation, leading to a variety of grapes they can grow.
Silarian was named after the geological feature of the area, laced with sedimentary rock laid down by the glaciers during what became known as the Silarian period. Owners Jeremy and Brenda Haese source all their wines from grapes harvested in their acreage, which includes right on the Tasting Room property and several other patches in the area, lying at different elevations amidst this rolling terrain on the Niagara Escarpment.
Silarian wines include a variety of whites and reds, and you can sample them with tastings (4 samples for $6) or have larger portions with flights (4 pours for $12). One flight includes four wines of your choice. If Jeremy is around, he will take you behind the science of each grape and how they grow in different areas of their vineyards. He knows his geology, too!
Wines – at our last visit – include:
- LaCrosse, a Sweet White
- Moxie, a Sweet Bubbly White
- Southern Rock Red, a semi-sweet red blend of Marquette, Petite Pearl, and Verona grape varieties
- Frontenac, a semi-sweet rose, described as a fruity wine with cotton candy aromatics and cherry-cranberry hard candy
- Silarian Blanc, a semi-dry white blend of Frontenac Blanc, Brianna, and La Crescent grapes.
- Hypster, a semi-dry rose with a hint of strawberries and cream followed by pineapple, watermelon, and strawberries
- Petite Pearl, a dry red aged in American oak barrels for over a year
- Marquette, a dry red
Additional wines, mostly from other regions, are available by the glass or bottle
You can stop in their Tasting Room and the patio when weather permits throughout the year on Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. Along with their wines, they feature several Wisconsin craft beers on tap, including at last check two from Green Bay’s Noble Roots Brewing, one from McFleshman’s from Appleton, and a favorite of ours, Silver Cream from Railhouse Brewing in Marinette.
Silarian Vineyards is on the backroads of Manitowoc County between Valders and Whitelaw with a Cato mailing address. You’ll find it on Hilltop Road a little over a mile south of U.S. 10, about three miles north of U.S. 151, a few miles west of I-43 and Highway 42.
