DESCRIPTION:High above surrounding territory (hence the name)\, The Highground Veterans Memorial Park serves as one of the nation’s finest tribute locations for American military veterans. The Highground Veterans Day Ceremony takes place Thursday\, November 11th. Due in part to COVID-19 precautionary steps\, this event will be held outdoors and the total length will be determined in part by weather. \nTHe Highground Veterans Day Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10am; the Wisconsin KIA/MIA/POW names from WWII to present day will be read and honored with the tolling of The Highground Liberty Bell. With all present and accounted for\, the Thorp VFW Post #9057 will present Colors on the Plaza at 11am. As of this writing\, the guest speaker is still to be determined. \nThe Ceremony itself will begin at 3pm. \nVeteran support and services will be onsite for continued resources. DESCRIPTION:Norskedalen hosts Ghoulees in the Coulees events Thursday\, October 28th through Saturday\, October 30th\, 2021 providing a fun\, yet scary and haunting\, experience for the whole family in this beautiful natural and cultural area near Coon Valley in southeastern La Crosse County. \nAt Ghoulees in the Coulees\, you can take a half-mile walk through chilling and thrilling spook stations along one of their wooded trails lined by hundreds of carved\, lit pumpkins. Once you navigate this\, you’ll regain your wits and end up with a treat and hot apple cider at Bekkum Homestead\, a historic homestead over 100 years old\, illuminated only by the light of the moon and jack-‘o-lanterns. \nSome of what awaits in the dark in Norskedalen during Ghoulees in the Coulees. Is this out of focus? Or are they ghosts??\nAlong with the hike\, you can enjoy storytelling\, fortune-telling\, grabbing a snack around the roaring fireplace\, and walking through the haunted barns and other buildings. While it can be fun for kids of all ages\, you may want to plan earlier hikes while it’s still light out for the very young and “faint of heart.” Earlier hikes around 5-7pm\, hikes are less scary (the spooks do not try to scare you\, but may offer a high-five\, handshake\, or wave). Conversely\, 7-10:30pm\, hikes are SUPER SCARY. They mean it! Chilling ghost stories designed to give you goosebumps will also be told at the end of your hike\, making regaining your wits tricky for some. Fortune tellers will also be there to peer into your future. \nFamily-friendly trick-or-treating takes place Thursday\, October 28th. Norskedalen’s Ghoulees in the Coulees Haunted Hikes take place Friday and Saturday October 29th & 30th. The Milwaukee County Drive-Thru Boo at the Zoo lets you drive on Zoo pathways and take in a variety of Halloween-themed areas\, carved pumpkins and illuminated light shows. The route is a 30-minute\, 1.5-mile Halloween ride that travels on  the wide and winding pathways through the Zoo. In fact\, design elements from the ‘60s are still around in today’s open concept homes referred to as mid-century modern\,” says Bob Sebastian\, MCR\, MCKBR\, CR\, CKBR\, UDCP\, owner of Sebastian Design in Wauwatosa.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ’70s from AB&K \nAB&K is tapping into the opulent\, over-the-top luxury of the ’70s by recreating a high-end bathroom. \nAnd\, thanks to Kohler\, the room will feature an oversized\, drop-in black soaking tub and vintage shampoo sink. Other room appointments include black\, shag-inspired carpeting\, foil wallpaper\, marble-like countertops and a translucent back-lit wall. \n“As we were planning the space\, I was able to visit Kohler and look through their advertising archives. I found one ad called ‘The Bath’ that really spoke to the flamboyant and bold design we wanted to portray\,” says Tracy Grosspietsch\, CKBR\, UDCP\, director of design and sales for AB&K in Greenfield. “Kohler generously allowed us to borrow some of their original pieces so you’ll get to see those in our ’70s space.”\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ’80s from MKE Design Build \nMKE Design Build is recreating the hallowed ground of a teenager’s bedroom from the ’80s. \nThe room is inspired by the classic movie\, “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off\,” and will feature concert posters\, a neon sign\, VCR\, Atari game system and oak desk. \n“When we started planning our space\, we realized many of those who are attending the show were teens during the ’80s so we want-ed to take them back to how their bedroom may have looked\,” says Michelle Swier\, co-owner and senior designer at MKE Design Build in St. Francis.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe ’90s from Gabor Design Build\nGabor Design Build is using two classic TV shows\, “Home Improvement” and “Roseanne”\, as their inspiration for a typical ’90s family room. \n“The ’90s were about family and comfortable living so that’s what you’ll see in our space\,” says Peter Jensen of Gabor Design Build in Germantown. \nTrue to the time\, the room will feature the one furniture item that overshadowed the decade – the extremely large oak entertainment center. The artists will be creating art during the event and are happy to explain their artistic process and inspirations. \nThe Tour is FREE. Opt for a rural drive between locations encompassing the fall splendor of rural Wisconsin: Farm fields\, pumpkin patches\, Lake Michigan shoreline\, picturesque small towns and even an historic wooden covered bridge. Or\, if you aren’t in the mood for a leisurely drive\, there is easy access between most of the spaces. The studio spaces are as unique and varied as the art. A spare bedroom in a suburban ranch home\, an industrial garage\, a 19th century barn\, an 1850‘s stone mill\, a walkout basement\, or a tent are all creative spaces where sculpture\, jewelry\, photography\, pottery\, blacksmithing\, woodworking\, weaving\, stain glass\, encaustics\, collage\, prints\, paintings in all mediums and styles\, and fiber arts are brought to life. This is your chance to purchase a unique piece of art directly from the artist along with its “story of creation”. Yes\, this hamlet of 400 tucked into the beautiful hills of Barron County hosts Valkyrie Brewing Company\, and Valkyrie is hosting the 25th annual Dallas Oktoberfest on Saturday\, October 2nd! \nWhile hosted by Valkyrie\, the Oktoberfest celebration will be taking place across parks and streets throughout Dallas. Enjoy everything from a pancake breakfast to a Kubb tournament. DESCRIPTION:Summerfest 2021 rolls on into its final weekend! It’s the “World’s Largest Music Festival” on Milwaukee’s lakefront\, and after the pandemic-related cancellation epidemic in 2020\, it’s been back! (Thought there are COVID-19 related protocols.) Typically consisting of 11 days of concerts and fun across a 12-day span\, you and nearly 900\,000 of your closest friends can enjoy over 1\,000 performances from nearly 800 acts on the 75-acre Maier Festival Park grounds. \nIn 2021\, Summerfest implemented a new type of schedule: shows and events across three summer weekends\, all Thursday – Saturday with a “Wednesday Weekend Kickoff Concert” at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater the evening prior each week. The dates will be in September this year to maximize the possibility of the COVID vaccine making it safer for a bigger gathering. The dates are September 2-4\, 9-11\, and 16-18\, 2021. \n \nSummerfest dates back to 1968 and has since become the backdrop for the music industry’s hottest stars\, emerging talent and local favorites to create unforgettable live music experiences in a world-class festival setting. DESCRIPTION:Chippewa Falls is plenty of fun any time of the year\, but as summer turns to fall Chippewa Falls Oktoberfest hits the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds and the party really starts! This year\, Chippewa Falls Oktoberfest runs Friday\, September 16th and Saturday\, September 17th\, 2022. \nThis year will bring more kids’ activities and Glockenspiel acts\, as well as some of our favorite competitions\, such as stein holding\, sauerkraut eating\, and keg rolling. The weekend kicks off in earnest with the Festmeister and Festmeisterin being announced at the Leinenkugel grounds at 12:00 noon on Friday\, followed by the Golden Keg procession to the Northern Wisconsin State Fairgrounds and the tapping of the Golden Keg. Festival goers can enjoy four stages\, over 30 entertainers\, vendors\, authentic foods\, and plenty of dancing. And of course\, plenty of Gemütlichkeit! \nDick Leinenkugel and State Trunk Tour founder Eric Paulsen at Oktoberfest in Chippewa Falls.\nRaise a stein\, don a dirndl or some lederhosen\, and enjoy live music ranging from polka to folk. DESCRIPTION:In Superior\, check out the Great Northern Classic Rodeo September 3-5\,  2021! This is an MRA/URA-sanctioned professional rodeo\, including saddle bronc riding\, steer wrestling\, calf roping\, team roping\, bareback riding\, cowgirl’s barrel racing\, bull riding. Other events include a 5K walk/run Saturday morning\, the Miracle rodeo on Sunday morning\, children’s games during all performances and numerous food/merchandise vendors. Great fun for the entire family! \nU.S. 2 and 53\, and Highways 13\, 35\, and 105 bring you to Superior. Yee-ha!! The Great Northern Classic Rodeo takes place on the Douglas County Fairgrounds\, right along Highway 35/Tower Avenue. \nTickets for the Great Northern Classic Rodeo are $14 in advance\, $15 at the gate\, $16 for reserved advance seats for adults; kids 6-12 are $7 in advance\, $8 at the gate\, and kids 5 and under are FREE. Seniors (65+) and Military have additional discounts\, get details and purchase tickets here. \nGreat Northern Classic Rodeo details:\nBareback Bronc Riding   The rigging is a wide leather belt that fits around the horse’s midsection\, just behind its shoulders.  The rider holds onto its stiff leather handle and leans back as far as his arm will allow while positioning his heels over the horse’s shoulders for the first jump out of the chute.  This is called “marking the animal out.”  The rider’s free hand cannot come in contact with the horse during the 8-second ride.  Each time the horse kicks\, the cowboy brings his knees toward his body\, keeping his heels against the horse and his toes turned out (called “spurring)\, then stretches his legs out again.  SPONSORED BY BARKERS ISLAND INN \nSaddle Bronc Riding   This requires the cowboy to sit upright in a saddle on the horse\, holding onto a buck rein that is attached only to the horse’s halter and move his legs from the knees down in a back-and-forth motion resembling the movement of a rocking chair.  His feet must remain in the stirrups with his toes turned out.  He must mark the horse out by keeping his heels in the well of the horse’s neck on the first jump and may not touch himself or the horse with his free hand.  The most physically grueling of all the rodeo events. \nBreakaway Roping   This requires the contestant to rope a calf in the quickest time\, with the rope breaking away from the saddle horn when the calf is caught and pulls the “slack” out of the rope.  The catch is considered clean if it passes over the calf’s head and is pulled taut anywhere on its body-even one heel!  Times can often be as quick as just a few seconds.  A barrier is stretched to allow the calf a “head start” and 10 second penalty applies if the cowgirl starts too early. \nSteer Wrestling   The object of steer wrestling\, also called “bulldogging\,” is to lean onto the back of a steer\, catch it from behind the horns\, quickly slide from the horse to the ground to stop the steer’s forward momentum and wrestle the animal to the ground with all four of its legs pointing in the same direction.  The bulldogger is assisted by a hazer\, who rides along the right side of the steer to keep it running straight.  The hazer is extremely important and can play a great part in whether the rider “gets down on his steer.” \nBarrel Racing   A speed event where times are measured in thousandths of a second with electric timers.  Barrel racing is set on a cloverleaf pattern marked by three 55-gallon drums placed on the two sides and far end of the arena.  Beginning and ending from the same point\, the rider goes first to either the right or left barrel\, circles it\, crosses to the other side and circles that barrel\, rides to the far barrel and circles it\, then rides full speed back across the starting line.  At one world’s final rodeo\, the world title was decided by 1/100th of a second in the last run of the last performance! SPONSORED BY BERNICKS PEPSI \nTeam Roping   A header ropes the animal (around both horns\, the neck or half the head) and wraps the rope around the saddle horn (“dallying”) to tow the steer and position it for the heeler to rope both back legs (roping just one leg earns a five second penalty).  The contest is not over until the heeler catches the legs and dallies\, the header has turned to face the heeler\, and both ropes are tight.  This action is used often on ranches to this date; it allows a steer to be handled in the open pasture if it has been injuried and needs to be doctored or branded. \nBull Riding   Holding a flat\, braided “bull rope” that has been placed around the animal just behind its shoulders\, the cowboy threads one end of the rope around his gloved hand and pulls it taut.  During the ride\, he tries to keep his body close to his hand with his legs slightly forward toes out and heels planted firmly in the bull’s side.  However\, the loose hide generally found on rodeo bulls makes them extremely difficult to ride and the size of these animals magnifies the possibility of injury.  The rider cannot touch his free hand to himself or the bull during the eight second time\, and as in bronc and saddle riding\, two judges score his ride and the performance of the animal.  SPONSORED BY FOND-DU-LUTH CASINO. \nWhew! DESCRIPTION:The Hartford Hot Air Balloon Rally is BACK after being gone for a decade\, dotting the sky with colors and the city with all kinds of fun activities on Saturday\, August 7\, 2021! Enjoy the massive balloon launch\, the Night Glow\, vintage airplanes\, plus plenty of food\, music\, and more at Hartford’s Municipal Airport. Fireworks will take place at dusk\, too. \n\nAdmission is free! Carry-ins are allowed\, although they request no glass items. Shuttle service begins at 4pm from the Jack Russell Memorial Library parking lot and Schauer Arts Center parking lot\, right next to the Wisconsin Automotive Museum.\n\n\n\nNote that the balloon launch is weather dependent; balloons will be arriving on the tarmac around 4:30pm and launch 1.5-2 hours before sunset. Fans will have the rare opportunity to stand inches away from legends like the Porsche 917\, 908\, 906\, Ferrari 312 and 312pb\, Lola T165\, 911 RSR’s\, Shelby GT 350s\, and on and on and on. \nSports Car Concours d’Elegance\nSaturday night is the Sports Car Concours d’Elegance from 6-8 p.m.\, also in Elkhart Lake. Brimming with rarity\, the track fills again. Most are rare metal\, fast metal\, and only once in a lifetime\, you’ll see it sports car bravado. The access again is unprecedented. Seeing owners giving little kids seat time in the race and sports cars is part of the fun.
