SUMMARY:Steel Bridge Songfest
DESCRIPTION:Steel Bridge Songfest\nSteel Bridge Songfest is the “Greatest Original Songwriters’ Festival in the Midwest.” Songwriters of national\, regional\, and local acclaim come together to write songs inspired by Sturgeon Bay’s Historic Steel Bridge. It consists of a four-day songwriting collaborative called the Construction Zone; their slogan is “Music so fresh it hasn’t been written yet!” \nFounded in 2005 by musician Pat MacDonald (of Timbuk3 fame) and his sister\, Steel Bridge Songfest began as part of a grass-roots campaign to restore the historic “Steel Bridge” – the original route of Highways 42 and 57 as they crossed Sturgeon Bay. 2019 marks a renewed direction for Steel Bridge Songfest. The non-profit they operate is becoming the Steel Bridge Creative Foundation\, and previous events like the pub crawl and the outdoor festival are being suspended for this year while they renew their focus on the music. As they noted: \n“While the pub crawl has been an annual shot in the arm for the bar scene\, and the outdoor festivals provide some good clean fun for the community\, our strongest supporters know that the heart and soul of ALL of our events has always been The Construction Zone where the songwriting and recording happens. This collaborative group process\, based on games of spin-the-bottle\, is unlike anything else happening anywhere. And we happen to be blessed with the perfect performance venue for bringing it all to light. We love working with Third Avenue Playhouse (TAP) and we’re excited to begin focusing exclusively on the writing\, recording\, and presentation of our newest “music so fresh\, it hasn’t been written yet” at TAP.” — from their site. \nOver 200 musicians perform at Steel Bridge Songfest each year. Live performances take place across several venues around Sturgeon Bay\, showcasing all of the newly written music as well as past favorites. A list of performers can be found on the festival website. \nThese “Construction Zone” participants write songs inspired by the bridge (or whatever)\, and then the songs are recorded on-site at the Holiday Music Motel and released as compilation albums. SUMMARY:Open House Racine County at Modine-Benstead Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy lovers and people who just like “far out” things\, this is for you! The Modine-Benstead Observatory is hosing one of its Open House Racine County events Saturday night\, June 8th for free exploration of the observatory and the stars and planets its telescopes gaze upon. \nSeriously\, you can just go in for free and look at the universe through their telescopes. Depending on conditions\, you can check out the moon\, planets\, and many deep sky objects. If they’re deep enough\, remember that you’re actually looking back in time. For example\, when you view the Andromeda galaxy\, you are looking back in time 2.9 million years. Trippy\, man! \nThese public open house events are held monthly from April through October. Parking is free along with free admission. The Racine Astrological Society\, which runs the whole thing\, is a non-profit\, volunteer-run organization and of course small donations are welcomed to help defray the yearly costs of observatory maintenance and care. While families are welcome\, be sure to keep young children close (it’s a dark area\, since the grounds are not illuminated to promote better observing) and instruct them to be careful with the telescope equipment\, which is provided by RAS members. Note that there may be lines to make observations through some telescopes. Questions are expected and welcomed\, since part of their club mission is to educate and inspire people to participate in the world of amateur astronomy. Friday night the 26th will feature Guest Artists Grace Kelly & The New York Voices. \nAfterwards\, you can enjoy the Airmen of Note\, the premiere jazz ensemble of the United States Air Force (and one of the six ensembles that form the Air Force Band.) Based in Washington DC\, the Airmen of Note formed in 1950 as a continuation of the military dance band tradition started by Major Glenn Miller\, the legendary bandleader and trombonist of the swing era. This first Chippewa Falls Sesquicentennial event to celebrate the city’s incorporation in 1869 is a musical. \nYou can experience it at the Heyde Center for the Arts and take a step back in time as the Wayward Players\, dressed in period costume\, sing songs from CHIPPEWA FALLS 1869: THE MUSICAL on the same date that the proclamation that founded the city was signed: March 25th. Browse through historic photographs\, enjoy complimentary snacks and beverages\, and talk with city officials and historians about the past\, present and future of Chippewa Falls. The Chippewa County Historical Society will have books about Chippewa Falls on sale\, a table and display of artifacts from the early 1800s\, fur trade re-enactors from the Past Passed Here\, and more. The Chippewa County Genealogy Society will be on hand with insights on many of the city’s founding families. \nAt 7:00 p.m. a formal program will be held in the Heyde Center auditorium starting with two songs by the Wayward Players. This will be followed by a brief speech by the Mayor of Chippewa Falls and finally the delivery of the proclamation to Doug Richter\, the great-grandson of William Irvine (of Irvine Park fame). Richter will be the Grand Marshal of the August 10\, 2019 Pure Water Days Parade in downtown Chippewa Falls. We’re pretty sure you can find corned beef\, for example… \n*** STT Tidbit: Milwaukee’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade dates back to 1843; it’s the 6th oldest such parade in the nation. **\nCheck out one of the best St Patrick’s Day Parades in the country and the grandest parade in Wisconsin. The Parade will feature 140+ units and includes local politicians and celebrities\, floats\, bagpipe and marching bands and Irish and Celtic organizations. It’s the perfect event for the whole family\, because on St. Patrick’s Day\, everyone is Irish! \nBefore the parade\, there’s an 8:30am mass at St. Patrick’s Church at 723 W. Washington Street just south of downtown. After the parade\, the Shamrock Club Post-Parade Party will take place at the Irish Cultural & Heritage Center at 2133 W. Wisconsin Avenue\, just west of downtown and the Marquette University campus. It’s Milwaukee’s Largest Family Parade Day Party and features four stages of entertainment.
