DESCRIPTION:Catalano Square in Milwaukee’s Historic Third Ward hosts the Under One Moon Festival\, a three-day pop-up festival that celebrates everything lunar. \nIts centerpiece is the Museum of the Moon\, a 23-foot diameter\, inflatable art installation of the lunar surface by Luke Jerram that rises over Catalano Square all weekend. The lunar celebration\, going on night and day\, includes moon songs\, chalk art\, original dance\, lectures from leading space experts and much more. The festival is produced under the direction of Black Box Fund\, a 501c3 nonprofit organization that supports public art\, music and performances that inspire and educate. \nThe remarkable detail of the Moon installation\, which suspends from a crane and hangs over the Catalano Square Fountain\, is the centerpiece. It shines at night and serves as a beacon for the festival. DESCRIPTION:Established back in 1871\, the Door County Fair is a fun-filled time for kids and adults of all ages. Check out the fair saluting the county with the longest freshwater coastline in the U.S.! \nAttractions include everything from Midway rides to tractor pulls and motorcycle racing to demolition derby. Plenty of animals will be on display and there will be a Quality Meat Animal Sale Saturday evening at 6pm. On their way back from Green Bay’s festival over the weekend\, Sturgeon Bay will be home to these majestic vessels Monday\, July 29 and the morning of Tuesday\, July 30 as part of Nicolet Bank Tall Ships®\, offering a wide variety of entertainment and experiences. \nThese nine ships will muster by Sherwood Point and then come in under sail tentatively between 3pm and 5pm on Monday\, July 29. The ships that are partaking in the Tall Ship Challenge will depart approximately 8am Tuesday morning\, July 30. SUMMARY:Open House Racine County at Modine-Benstead Observatory
DESCRIPTION:Astronomy lovers and people who just like “far out” things\, this is for you! The Modine-Benstead Observatory is hosing one of its Open House Racine County events Saturday night\, June 8th for free exploration of the observatory and the stars and planets its telescopes gaze upon. \nSeriously\, you can just go in for free and look at the universe through their telescopes. Depending on conditions\, you can check out the moon\, planets\, and many deep sky objects. If they’re deep enough\, remember that you’re actually looking back in time. For example\, when you view the Andromeda galaxy\, you are looking back in time 2.9 million years. Trippy\, man! \nThese public open house events are held monthly from April through October. Parking is free along with free admission. The Racine Astrological Society\, which runs the whole thing\, is a non-profit\, volunteer-run organization and of course small donations are welcomed to help defray the yearly costs of observatory maintenance and care. While families are welcome\, be sure to keep young children close (it’s a dark area\, since the grounds are not illuminated to promote better observing) and instruct them to be careful with the telescope equipment\, which is provided by RAS members. Note that there may be lines to make observations through some telescopes. Questions are expected and welcomed\, since part of their club mission is to educate and inspire people to participate in the world of amateur astronomy. DESCRIPTION:Prairie du Chien hosts Bald Eagle Appreciation Days at Hoffman Hall in the city and at locales around town Friday and Saturday\, February 22-23. You can view eagles along the beautiful Great River Road (Highway 35) and up and down the Mississippi River flyway around Prairie du Chien\, check out live Bald Eagle and raptor programs\, educational exhibits and displays\, birding experts on hand\, outdoor viewing of Bald Eagles through spotting scopes\, life-size Bald Eagle nest\, craft activities for children and more. \nAll programs and activities at Hoffman Hall in Prairie Du Chien on Saturday are free. Educational Birding programs will also be held Friday evening – at local hotels and are open to the public at no charge. The event is co-sponsored by Effigy Mounds National Monument and the Prairie du Chien Tourism Council. Effigy Mounds Winter Film Festival will also be going on that weekend and the Villa Louis will be open for tours. A large artesian well provides open water. Eagles will perch in trees along the slough. Check the trees along the Mississippi River shore near and across from Lawler Park on St. Feriole Island is another location of eagle activity. The park is west and north of the Blackhawk Avenue bridge. A mounted bird scope for viewing is available (located in back of building) at the Wisconsin Welcome Center/Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce building\, 211 S. Main. Enroute to Prairie du Chien watch for eagles soaring or perching in trees in open field areas looking for food. \nYou can spend the day or several days viewing eagles. You will need appropriate clothing and binoculars. A spotting scope is nice too. Eagle watching begins in the morning about an hour after sunrise. The birds are most active from then until about 3:00PM\, feeding in open water areas. Birds can be seen soaring\, perching in riverside trees\, and sitting on the ice. By late afternoon the birds will be heading for the roost and will not be active unless you are on a flight path to the roost. \nThe best places to see eagles in the area include the Gordon’s Bay boat landing and Lock and Dam #9\, 10 miles north of Prairie du Chien. The boat landing is cleared of snow so eagle watchers can simply park near the ramp facing slightly upstream. Watch for eagles in the big cottonwoods along the Wisconsin shoreline\, across the river in trees along the Iowa shoreline\, and soaring overhead or over the open water caused by flowing water from the dam. Staying in your vehicle will provide you the best viewing as soaring eagles have been known to come very close to the boat landing with their feeding activity. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 5th and/or February 2nd\, 2019\, spend a night with family and friends at Blue Mound\, the highest point in southern Wisconsin. From high atop\, they welcome 2019 with the Blue Mound Candlelight Ski\, Hike\, and Snowshoe event hosted by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park. \nA 1 and 2-mile candlelit\, wooded loop will be available to ski and a separate 0.75-mile candlelit wooded trail will be available for hikers\, snowshoers and leashed pets. Warm up with free hot drinks inside the heated shelter. Hot refreshments\, baked goods and shirts will be available for sale. Enjoy the bonfire and free marshmallows for roasting. Guided hikes through the illuminated woods with the park Naturalist will be held at 6 and 7 p.m. The only cost for this fun-filled family event is a daily or annual park sticker\, which may be purchased upon entry to the park. DESCRIPTION:Fond du Lac literally means “Bottom of the Lake” or “Foot of the Lake” in French\, so it’s fitting that this synchronized skating classic takes place here. The city’s Blue Line Family Ice Center hosts nationally competing synchronized skating teams performing all day in both exhibition shows and competition for awards and prizes. Come and enjoy this exciting and beautiful team sport on Saturday\, January 5th! This competition will host approximately 85 synchronized skating teams from the East Coast to the West Coast\, and of course our favorite places in between\, like\, you know\, Wisconsin. DESCRIPTION:East Troy’s classic electric railroad runs between East Troy and Mukwonago\, once part of a much longer interurban line. You can enjoy train rides much of the year\, but during the holidays the East Troy Christmas Train makes it extra festive. \nThe East Troy Christmas Train takes you from the East Troy Depot – which also holds a cool little train museum – to Santa’s workshop located at the Elegant Farmer just outside Mukwonago\, pretty much on the Walworth-Waukesha County border along County ES… once the main road (as Highway 15) between Beloit and Milwaukee before I-43 was built. You’ll recognize the “smiley face” on the barn! \nAt the Elegant Farmer\, long known for their great pie and bakery\, children can visit Santa and get a photo\, enjoy hot chocolate and cookies\, and more. The total experience lasts about two hours\, including the rides back and forth and an hour at The Elegant Farmer. Boarding is only done at the East Troy Depot and they do recommend advance reservations. Find out more on reserving a space here. \nAdult tickets run $18.50. Tickets for Children (3-14) are $16.00\, Toddlers (2 and under) are $8.00. Children ages 3 and up receive a gift. Tickets are non-refundable and non-transferable. If you bring a non-perishable food item with each member of your party\, you’ll receive a 10% discount on tickets at the Depot. All donated items will benefit the East Troy Food Pantry. You can buy the tickets in advance at regular price and receive your discount when you arrive at the East Troy Depot with your donated items. \nTickets may be purchased online in advance\, or at the Depot starting Saturday\, November 24th on Saturdays and Sundays through December 16th. The Depot opens at 8:30am\, last ride departs at 3pm. \nEast Troy Christmas Train rides depart at 9:00am\, 1030am\, Noon\, 1:30pm\, and 3pm.
