DESCRIPTION:Prairie du Chien hosts Bald Eagle Appreciation Days at Hoffman Hall in the city and at locales around town Friday and Saturday\, February 22-23. You can view eagles along the beautiful Great River Road (Highway 35) and up and down the Mississippi River flyway around Prairie du Chien\, check out live Bald Eagle and raptor programs\, educational exhibits and displays\, birding experts on hand\, outdoor viewing of Bald Eagles through spotting scopes\, life-size Bald Eagle nest\, craft activities for children and more. \nAll programs and activities at Hoffman Hall in Prairie Du Chien on Saturday are free. Educational Birding programs will also be held Friday evening – at local hotels and are open to the public at no charge. The event is co-sponsored by Effigy Mounds National Monument and the Prairie du Chien Tourism Council. A large artesian well provides open water. Eagles will perch in trees along the slough. Check the trees along the Mississippi River shore near and across from Lawler Park on St. Feriole Island is another location of eagle activity. The park is west and north of the Blackhawk Avenue bridge. A mounted bird scope for viewing is available (located in back of building) at the Wisconsin Welcome Center/Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce building\, 211 S. Main. Enroute to Prairie du Chien watch for eagles soaring or perching in trees in open field areas looking for food. \nYou can spend the day or several days viewing eagles. You will need appropriate clothing and binoculars. A spotting scope is nice too. Eagle watching begins in the morning about an hour after sunrise. The birds are most active from then until about 3:00PM\, feeding in open water areas. Birds can be seen soaring\, perching in riverside trees\, and sitting on the ice. By late afternoon the birds will be heading for the roost and will not be active unless you are on a flight path to the roost. \nThe best places to see eagles in the area include the Gordon’s Bay boat landing and Lock and Dam #9\, 10 miles north of Prairie du Chien. The boat landing is cleared of snow so eagle watchers can simply park near the ramp facing slightly upstream. Watch for eagles in the big cottonwoods along the Wisconsin shoreline\, across the river in trees along the Iowa shoreline\, and soaring overhead or over the open water caused by flowing water from the dam. Staying in your vehicle will provide you the best viewing as soaring eagles have been known to come very close to the boat landing with their feeding activity. SUMMARY:Blue Mound Candlelight Ski\, Hike & Snowshoe
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 5th and/or February 2nd\, 2019\, spend a night with family and friends at Blue Mound\, the highest point in southern Wisconsin. From high atop\, they welcome 2019 with the Blue Mound Candlelight Ski\, Hike\, and Snowshoe event hosted by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park. \nA 1 and 2-mile candlelit\, wooded loop will be available to ski and a separate 0.75-mile candlelit wooded trail will be available for hikers\, snowshoers and leashed pets. Warm up with free hot drinks inside the heated shelter. Hot refreshments\, baked goods and shirts will be available for sale. Enjoy the bonfire and free marshmallows for roasting. Guided hikes through the illuminated woods with the park Naturalist will be held at 6 and 7 p.m. The only cost for this fun-filled family event is a daily or annual park sticker\, which may be purchased upon entry to the park. DESCRIPTION:Madison’s Elver Park becomes a wonderland of winter activities at the 14th annual Madison Winter Festival\, attracting over 20\,000 spectators\, winter enthusiasts\, and athletes! For the competition\, they are bringing back the Ice Age Challenge ski race\, once held in Spring Green. There will also be a 5K running race\, high school ski races and a fat tire bike race. You can even take a run with your dog! \nCheck out the Movin’ Shoes Frosty 5K Run or the Ice Age Challenge Saturday afternoon. The Candlelight Ski & Snowshoe Tour takes place Saturday night. Sunday features the Elver Park Skijor Race and the Snowshoe Scurry. DESCRIPTION:Paperfest 2017\nThe Fox Valley’s paper making history gets its salute with the 29th annual Paperfest celebration! This year\, Paperfest takes place in Kimberly’s Sunset Point Park\, right along the Fox River. Paperfest is a fun\, family-oriented festival spanning three days offering up plenty of games\, sports\, music and food – and education about paper. \nFriday night features the Paper Chase\, a 4 mile run/walk. Saturday is the Tour de Fest ’17\, a biking competition which will be held rain or shine. This annual bike tour offers cyclists a choice of four routes – 18\, 40\, 70\, and 100 miles. The cyclists should their energy – the 100 mile route includes the appropriately named Seven Hills Road! \nRest stops along the way will provide bagels\, fruit\, snacks\, beverages\, and restrooms. SAG wagons will patrol the routes until 3:00 p.m.\, providing direction\, mechanical assistance and transportation\, if needed. Spectators can watch and enjoy while imbibing in the food and drink available at Paperfest and at establishments along each route. \nOther fun things to check out include the toilet paper toss\, carnival rides\, lawn games\, yoga\, and more. Saturday features events in the Family Tent including comedy\, magic\, and karate demonstrations. On the music stages across three days The Bomb\, Road Trip. DESCRIPTION:Imagine an Ice Castle Wonderland in the already wondrous Wisconsin Dells\, right next to the upside-down White House on the grounds as the World’s Largest Wooden Trojan Horse on the grounds of Mt Olympus Resort. \nWell\, you don’t need to imagine. Six days a week from January 12th through mid-March (weather permitting)\, a massive ice castle compound will be in that very spot\, ready for exploration by the whole family. The artistic project began in October on the grounds of Mount Olympus Resort\, one of five projects in North America by Ice Castles LLC\, a Utah-based company with similar projects in New Hampshire\, Minnesota\, Utah\, and Alberta\, Canada. One of the most unique and amazing facts about the Ice Castles is that they are literally built by hand. The walking surface inside of the Ice Castles is made of crushed ice. Walking in boots is definitely best.\nBuy Tickets Before You Arrive. When you buy a ticket\, you buy an arrival time. SUMMARY:"First Fridays" at the Cedarburg Cultural Center featuring Comfort Shag
DESCRIPTION:“First Fridays” will provide an opportunity for families to come together to partake in an artistic experience\, including unique educational elements for youth ranging from artist-led crafts to hands-on musical experiences. Guests are greeted with an opening band featuring local musicians at 6:00 pm. Dinner will be available for purchase from food trucks\, as well as indoors from “After Party” Sponsor\, The Stilthouse Restaurant. Other activities include a local handmade art show\, kid’s crafts\, dancing\, cash bar and good times. At 7:00pm\, the lights go down and the party turns up as the main act\, Comfort Shag\, takes the stage for two hours. The Center’s full cash bar and dance floor will multiply the fun. This exciting series is free of charge to members of the Cultural Center and children under 5. Non-member general admission is $5 at the door. SUMMARY:Hot Air for Hearts Balloon Rally
DESCRIPTION:Organizers of the Lakewoods’ Hot Air for Hearts Balloon Rally are holding another fun-filled weekend with hot air balloonists from Wisconsin and Minnesota who come to participate in the Hot Air Balloon Rally for Charity. \nPeople from all over the Midwest attend this event\, which raises money for the Cable Area Lions Heart Benefit. Weather permitting\, crew members help the balloonists set up and take down balloons and may ride along with the pilots during the flights. Flights are scheduled mornings and afternoons on Friday\, Saturday and Sunday (morning only) and will fly as often as the weather permits. \n“The balloons can’t always go up daily due to weather\,” said Jill H. volunteer crew member\, “but when you get to fly the views are incredible.” In addition to the balloon flights\, a “glow” is scheduled in front of Lakewoods Resort after dark. On Saturday night\, guests in the dining room and spectators alike are treated to a fantastic view of Lake Namakagon and the 7 story high balloons lit up from the inside like giant luminary candles. \nThis charity event is great for the family and is a fantastic way to get out and enjoy the new snow this winter. All the colors of the balloons and racers make for a fun and festive atmosphere and both are very exciting to watch. Registration starts at 8am.
