DESCRIPTION:The Milwaukee Air & Water Show\, sponsored by Waterstone Bank\, offers one of the top air shows in the Midwest along the city’s gorgeous lakefront. They roar along Milwaukee’s lakefront Saturday\, July 19th and Sunday\, July 20th. \nAn “M” for Milwaukee at the Milwaukee Air & Water Show we snapped from Back Bay Park on Milwaukee’s East Side.\nExciting acts having performed in Milwaukee’s skies this July include the U.S. Navy P-8 Poseidon Patrol Aircraft\, U.S. Navy Leapfrogs Parachute Team\, the USAF T-38 “Talons”in 2-3 ship formation\, the return of the U.S. Air Force A-10 Warthogs\, the U.S. Navy F/A-18 Super-Hornet Tactical Demonstration Squadron\, the Wisconsin Air National Guard KC-135 Stratotanker straight from Milwaukee’s own 128th Air Refueling Wing base\, and the Firebirds X-treme Team. Solo aerobatics and stunts have been performed by Bill Stein\, Mike Wiscus\, Jack Knutson\, Matt Chapman\, and Lt. Colonel Josh “Tater” Boudreaux of the “Wild Blue Rodeo.” \nOn the waters of Lake Michigan\, you’ve been able to enjoy the USCGC Bristol Bay (WLB)\, a 225-foot multi-mission buoy tender out of Detroit; a Water Show act from Milwaukee’s own Dennis Pinter\, who demonstrated the “Air Chair” on the water! Daredevil and Pro Flyboard competitor Casey “Swizzle” McElwee who performed with his Hydroflyte and Flyboard act. We also hope to see the return of the Milwaukee Fire Department’s “Trident Fireboat\,” which demonstrates its capabilities on the water\, and witness an HH-60 Jayhawk Rescue Helicopter Air-Sea Rescue Demostration courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard Air Station out of Traverse City\, Michigan. \n \nYou can watch from Bradford Beach and many other areas along Milwaukee’s lakefront for free. SUMMARY:Sputnik Fest
DESCRIPTION:Manitowoc celebrates Sputnik Fest due to an out-of-this-world experience on September 5\, 1962 when a piece of the Soviet satellite Sputnik IV crashed to earth\, just north of downtown right in the middle of 8th Street/U.S. 10/Highway 42. It was still glowing from the heat of re-entry when it landed! A brass ring in the street notes the exact spot of impact. The city celebrates Sputnik Fest to commemorate the glowing visitor’s anniversary\, where you’ll see some interesting costumes and space-related activities. Basically at Sputnik Fest\, science fiction rules the day – even though Sputnik itself was very real. See 5 Things about Sputnikfest in Manitowoc (and why you should go) for more on that. \nCircle marks the spot where a piece of Sputnik landed. It’s the whole reason for Sputnik Fest.\nThe landing site of that piece of Sputnikfest – which inspired this whole thing – is right in front of the Rahr-West Art Museum\, which hosts the event and holds a cast from the original piece of the spacecraft – the original was returned to the Russians – that is available for viewing all year. \nThe festival draws plenty of space fans – with Star Wars and Star Trek characters well-represented – costume contests\, music\, go-kart racing down 8th Street (there’s a bit of a hill towards the heart of downtown)\, food\, drinks\, and even an “alien drop”\, where hundreds of mini-alien figures are dropped from a cherry picker – some with prizes. Even the hosting group\, the Rahr-West Art Museum\, calls it a “wacky tacky” weekend. Music from bands like Bazooka Joe add to the fun! SUMMARY:Kites Over Lake Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Kites Over Lake Michigan is one of the largest kite festivals in the Midwest and attracts kite fliers from all over. Check out giant show kites\, precision stunt kite teams flying dual- and quad-line kites\, spectacular and colorful ground displays\, running of the bols\, and games for kids! Learn how to fly two and quad line stunt kites from the experts. \nKites Over Lake Michigan continues at Two Rivers High School with other activities taking place along Lake Michigan nearby. It will take place Saturday\, August 31st and Sunday\, September 1st. This includes a night fly on Saturday night\, conditions permitting. \n \nSince the High School serves as the festival grounds\, Walsh Field (on 22nd Street just before the turn into Neshotah Beach) will serve as the overflow parking area. A shuttle bus service will run between Walsh Field and the high school both days from 11 am to 5 pm. Please note that the bus will be limited to 23 people per trip to allow for social distancing\, more if family members living together are present. All those using the shuttle will have to be masked. Also\, pets are not allowed anywhere on school property.\nGood news: Free kite making for kids will continue\, taking place Sunday 9/2/24 at 9.00 am. \nGreat News: The Fireworks Show WILL take place\, and it will happen Saturday evening at 8 pm. Fireworks will be shot off behind the Coast Guard Station\, allowing people to spread out over a wide area and still have optimum viewing from various places along the waterfront. \nHighway 42 is the road to both Neshotah Beach and Two Rivers High School; Highway 147 brings you to Two Rivers from the north\, and Highway 310 provides quick access to and from I-43. DESCRIPTION:Hudson was the last Wisconsin stop for westbound travelers on the iconic Yellowstone Trail\, which in St. Croix County roughly follows the path of today’s U.S. 12. The city celebrates 111 years of history for the Trail on Saturday\, August 10th this year with Yellowstone Trail Heritage Day. \n \nThe year was 1912 and the auto was gaining popularity. It wasn’t uncommon for horse drawn wagons to share potholes with the automobiles that also traveled the country roads and passed through everything the horses left behind. \nA few ambitious folks got together and decided to connect county roads which resulted in the first transcontinental road – The Yellowstone Trail. DESCRIPTION:Port Fish Days is BACK to being a multi-day festival! This fun weekend\, which for a long time has featured “The World’s Largest One-Day Outdoor Fish Fry\,” offers a TON of fun in the beautiful downtown and harbor areas of Port Washington. \nOkay\, along with the fish fry\, we’re talking lots of fun: music on four stages\, rides\, fireworks\, and plenty of other cool stuff like soccer water fights all along Port Washington’s beautiful harbor on Lake Michigan\, where even on a hot day it tends to be nice and comfortable. \nPort Fish Day in 2023 begins on Thursday\, July 13th and runs through Saturday\, July 15th with a variety of events each day and night. It begins with the Corn Hole Tournament Thursday evening with music Friday afternoon into the evening by Nate Horlache.\nSaturday is the busy day – it begins with a nice calorie burn in the form of the Coal Dock Park Portal Run/Walk/Roll at 8am. Starting at 10am\, the Beer Garden\, Arts & Crafts Show\, and Family Zone activities fire up at Upper Lake Park. Coal Dock and Upper Lake Park essentially flank downtown Port Washington\, with all of their shops\, restaurants\, and marina activities in between. \nAlong with the Beer Garden\, Arts & Crafts Show\, and Family Zone from 10am – 8pm in Upper Lake Park\, Port Washington hosts the Downtown Parade from 11am – 12:30pm up Franklin Street. DESCRIPTION:High above surrounding territory (hence the name)\, The Highground Veterans Memorial Park serves as one of the nation’s finest tribute locations for American military veterans. The Highground Veterans Day Ceremony takes place Thursday\, November 11th. Due in part to COVID-19 precautionary steps\, this event will be held outdoors and the total length will be determined in part by weather. \nTHe Highground Veterans Day Ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10am; the Wisconsin KIA/MIA/POW names from WWII to present day will be read and honored with the tolling of The Highground Liberty Bell. With all present and accounted for\, the Thorp VFW Post #9057 will present Colors on the Plaza at 11am. As of this writing\, the guest speaker is still to be determined. \nThe Ceremony itself will begin at 3pm. \nVeteran support and services will be onsite for continued resources. DESCRIPTION:The 28th annual Exeland Trout Festival\, sponsored by the Exeland Rod & Gun Club\, will be held over Labor Day weekend\, Friday\, Saturday & Sunday\, September 4\, 5 & 6\, 2020. A $3 Trout Fest button gets you admission to get on the Sports Center grounds\, and the button is good for all three days. This year’s festival motto is “Make your day a keeper!” \nFestivities begin Friday at the Sports Center at 5:00 p.m. A trout fish sandwich & chips basket will be the night’s specialty at Rod’s Bar & Grill. You can sign up for the cribbage tournament\, which begins at 5:00 pm (play begins at 5:30 registration fee of $10 per team.) The men’s 8-team double elimination softball tournament also starts with games at 5:45 & 6:45 p.m. Everyone is welcome to play on the Bean Bag court during the evening. Presentation of the Medallion Hunt winner is at 7:00 p.m. DJ music will be played throughout the activities. \nAt 7:30 pm\, Chris Kroeze performs. The former star on The Voice is from nearby and will put on a terrific show with great music! Fans are urged to bring a lawn chair. \nAppropriately\, Saturday’s events start with a trout fishing contest. Registration is on Main Street. The contest begins at 7:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m. Entry fee is proof of a festival button. Contest is for brook trout only. Trophies will be awarded to the top three fish. The three winners of the contest will be invited to ride on the Exeland Rod & Gun Club float in Sunday’s parade. Once again\, the trout fishing in the Exeland area this year has been unbelievable! \nThe Dave Lindau Memorial pancake breakfast will be from 7:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. inside the Exeland Rod & Gun Clubhouse located at the Sports Center. \nMain Street will be busy on Saturday morning beginning at 8:00 a.m. Rummage sales\, craft sales\, garage sales\, and a bake sale will be going on. If you have a craft booth or other items to sell\, just show up\, find a spot on the street\, and start selling. There is no fee to vendors. \nIt’s a bike rider’s paradise! This will be the fourth year of the Trout Fest off road bike ride. A 27 mile loop through some of the most beautiful country northern Wisconsin has to offer. All ages are welcome but you should be in good physical shape as it’s a very challenging route. Registration is at 9:00 a.m. on Main Street in front of Superior Choice Credit Union and the ride will begin at 10:00 a.m. Cost is a Trout Fest button. A meal coupon will be presented to all participants after the ride to be redeemed at the Sports Center. \nFollow the many sporting events taking place at the Sports Center. Seven beautiful girls are competing for this year’s prestigious title. Last year’s queen Grace Zimmer will pass her crown onto the new winner. One of the 16 little gals competing for the Little Princess title will also be crowned at this time. \nAt 5:30 p.m. the Exeland Rod & Gun Club will make a little boy and girl happy when they draw to give away two free bikes and fishing poles. \nSaturday concludes with a street dance at the Sports Center pavilion from 8:00 p.m. – 11:30 p.m. Music will be provided by “The G Men”. The former Exeland band is reuniting for the first time in 30 years. Look for a fun night! \nSunday’s events continue in the morning at 7:30 a.m. with the pancake breakfast at the Rod & Gun Clubhouse located at the Sports Center. Blueberry pancakes are the specialty. Breakfast concludes at 10:30 a.m. \nAt high noon the “Joe Trcka Memorial Parade” with 75 units will move down Main Street. One of the best small town parades in the area with lots of candy being tossed out to the kids. If you haven’t registered your unit yet and would like to be in the parade\, just show up at Swan Creek Park between 11 – 11:30 a.m. This year’s grand marshals are Neal & Marna Halberg\, longtime Exeland residents who are very active in all community events. \nAfter the parade\, it’s back to the Sports Center to be part of the many events still going on. Once again\, the kids can enjoy the inflatable games that are on the ground. \n \nAt 1:00 p.m. a delicious “chicken dinner” will be available at the new food shelter. Check out Birds of Prey shows\, an eagle release\, guided bus tours\, Native American legends\, aerial antics\, and family activities at this free\, family-friendly event Friday\, January 17th and Saturday\, January 18th. \nFor winter survival\, eagles need open water for fishing\, undeveloped shoreline with large trees for perching\, and sheltered valleys for night-time roosting. Eagle watching is best during the morning when the birds are most active fishing and are frequently seen perching in trees along the river. Spotting scopes are available for your use at Ferry Bluff Eagle Council’s Overlook in Prairie du Sac. \nMarge from REGIS (the Raptor Education Group Inc.) will be releasing up to 3 eagles\, including one “magnificent” adult\, starting at 1 p.m. on Saturday\, January 19\, 2019. You can view eagles along the beautiful Great River Road (Highway 35) and up and down the Mississippi River flyway around Prairie du Chien\, check out live Bald Eagle and raptor programs\, educational exhibits and displays\, birding experts on hand\, outdoor viewing of Bald Eagles through spotting scopes\, life-size Bald Eagle nest\, craft activities for children and more. \nAll programs and activities at Hoffman Hall in Prairie Du Chien on Saturday are free. Educational Birding programs will also be held Friday evening – at local hotels and are open to the public at no charge. The event is co-sponsored by Effigy Mounds National Monument and the Prairie du Chien Tourism Council. A large artesian well provides open water. Eagles will perch in trees along the slough. Check the trees along the Mississippi River shore near and across from Lawler Park on St. Feriole Island is another location of eagle activity. The park is west and north of the Blackhawk Avenue bridge. A mounted bird scope for viewing is available (located in back of building) at the Wisconsin Welcome Center/Prairie du Chien Area Chamber of Commerce building\, 211 S. Main. Enroute to Prairie du Chien watch for eagles soaring or perching in trees in open field areas looking for food. \nYou can spend the day or several days viewing eagles. You will need appropriate clothing and binoculars. A spotting scope is nice too. Eagle watching begins in the morning about an hour after sunrise. The birds are most active from then until about 3:00PM\, feeding in open water areas. Birds can be seen soaring\, perching in riverside trees\, and sitting on the ice. By late afternoon the birds will be heading for the roost and will not be active unless you are on a flight path to the roost. \nThe best places to see eagles in the area include the Gordon’s Bay boat landing and Lock and Dam #9\, 10 miles north of Prairie du Chien. The boat landing is cleared of snow so eagle watchers can simply park near the ramp facing slightly upstream. Watch for eagles in the big cottonwoods along the Wisconsin shoreline\, across the river in trees along the Iowa shoreline\, and soaring overhead or over the open water caused by flowing water from the dam. Staying in your vehicle will provide you the best viewing as soaring eagles have been known to come very close to the boat landing with their feeding activity. DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 5th and/or February 2nd\, 2019\, spend a night with family and friends at Blue Mound\, the highest point in southern Wisconsin. From high atop\, they welcome 2019 with the Blue Mound Candlelight Ski\, Hike\, and Snowshoe event hosted by the Friends of Blue Mound State Park. \nA 1 and 2-mile candlelit\, wooded loop will be available to ski and a separate 0.75-mile candlelit wooded trail will be available for hikers\, snowshoers and leashed pets. Warm up with free hot drinks inside the heated shelter. Hot refreshments\, baked goods and shirts will be available for sale. Enjoy the bonfire and free marshmallows for roasting. Guided hikes through the illuminated woods with the park Naturalist will be held at 6 and 7 p.m. The only cost for this fun-filled family event is a daily or annual park sticker\, which may be purchased upon entry to the park. Power Pac Equipment busts out the axes this weekend with Marshfield’s Lumberjack Fall Fest\, happening Saturday\, October 20th. \nLumberjack Fall Fest is definitely a festival for the whole family! To kick off fall\, Power Pac is hosting the Timberworks Lumberjacks\, a high-energy lumberjack show. Feel the rush of adrenaline as competitors race up poles at lightning speed or saw through twelve inches of aspen with the speed of a modern-day chain saw. Then move to the edge of your seat as they show off their fancy footwork while running on logs or throw axes with the precision of a dart board champion. The show includes numerous entertaining demonstrations including: \n• Log rolling\n• Pole climbing races\n• Ax throwing\n• Fast paced log chopping and sawing\n• Chainsaw carving \nTimberworks will perform 3 shows at 11:00\, 1:00 and 3:00 Saturday. DESCRIPTION:Formerly the Grill Games\, Kenosha’s newly-christened “Bands\, Brews\, & BBQ on the Beach” is a free three-day weekend festival featuring outstanding live musical acts throughout the day and plenty of grills and BBQ. This year\, it runs Friday\, August 24th through Saturday\, August 25th. The event gets a new name and a fresh shot of vision as the newly christened Bands\, Brews & BBQs on the Kenosha Lakefront at Pennoyer & Kennedy Parks. \nLike before when it was the Grill Games\, check out the Wisconsin State Championship BBQ contest with teams from the Kansas City Barbeque Society! You can learn their secrets\, taste and purchase BBQ\, and vote for your favorite teams. There are also plenty of kids’ activities and a beer garden – because beer pairs exceptionally well with tasty BBQ. “Kenosha’s Best BBQ Contest” runs Friday the 24th from 5pm to 8pm and the “People’s Choice BBQ Competition” runs Saturday the 25th from 2pm to 4:30pm. \n \nAdmission is $5/day. Proceeds benefit the scholarship foundations of the Kenosha YMCA and the Kenosha Area Chamber of Commerce. \nThe Kenosha HarborPark area is between downtown and Lake Michigan\, just east of Highway 32 between Highways 158 and 50.
