Here’s a more detailed rundown of the artists at this year’s Capital City Jazz Fest:
BRIA SKONBERG QUINTET
Award winning trumpeter/vocalist Bria Skonberg is one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation. Bria co-founded and led Mighty Aphrodite, a highly popular, all-woman band. Her trumpet skills have been recognized by the likes of Nicholas Payton, Anat Cohen, Bucky Pizzarelli and Scott Robinson. Bria focuses on innovating while honoring tradition and, best known for her knowledge of classic jazz, is creating a style all her own rooted in New Orleans grooves. A specialist in classic American hot jazz, Bria expands the traditions of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet. She is an educator, Co-Director/Founder of the New York Hot Jazz Camp, and Co-Founder of the New York Hot Jazz Festival. Members: Skonberg, trumpet; Evan Arntzen, clarinet; Dalton Ridenour, piano; Sean Cronic, bass & Darien Douglas, drums. For more: briaskonberg.com
BOB SCHULZ’S FRISCO JAZZ BAND
Regular attendees of the Fest will recognize Bob Schulz and his band from their numerous appearances over the years. He organized his Frisco Jazz Band in 1989 and patterned it after Bob Scobey’s Frisco Band of the 1950s and 1960s. The band performs a vast array of selections, ranging from Muggsy Spanier to Turk Murphy to Eddie Condon, all played much the way the free-spirited Scobey would have done. Bob was a founding member of Wisconsin’s Riverboat Ramblers and joined Turk Murphy’s Jazz Band in 1979. He is considered the foremost exponent of the Scobey trumpet style and an outstanding vocalist in the tradition of Clancy Hayes. Members: Schulz, trumpet; Kim Cusack, clarinet; Doug Finke, trombone; Scott Anthony, banjo; Ray Skjelbred, piano; Mike Walbridge, tuba & Ray Templin, piano. bobschulzjazz.com
This trio will bring invigorating swing music to the party. Coming from the well-known Vache family, Allan has performed on clarinet with jazz greats such as Jim Cullum, Wild Bill Davison, Gene Krupa, Dick Hyman and Bob Haggart. Jazz lovers have seen him in all-star groups at many festivals. Danny Coots is probably the most familiar drummer on the fest circuit. His quirky sense of humor is second only in popularity to his vigorous drumming. He helped form the Titan Hot Seven and has played and recorded with Bob Wilber, Johnny Varro, Bill Allred, Randy Reinhart, John Sheridan, Rebecca Kilgore — and we’re just getting started. Completing this stellar group is Stephanie Trick on piano. Dick Hyman said that Stephanie is one of the nicest gifts to arrive on the jazz piano scene in recent times and she has come to practically dominate the stride piano field. altissimo-music.com, dannycoots.com
STEPHANIE TRICK & PAOLO ALDERIGHI
Piano lovers have a real treat in store when Stephanie is joined by her husband, acclaimed pianist Paolo Alderighi. Together, they have created arrangements of songs from the Swing Era as a four-hand piano duo. In 2014, they played for the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall at the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival. Paolo has performed or recorded with musicians well known in the jazz scene (Howard Alden, John Allred, Joe Ascione, Marty Grosz, Scott Hamilton, Duke Heitger, Dick Hyman, Ken Peplowski and more). Now based in Italy, Stephanie and Paolo have performed at jazz festivals all over the world. Their flawless performances and easy-going personalities never fail to impress. stephanietrick.com; paoloalderighi.com
